In 1996, Michael Jackson landed in a Rio favela to film “They Don’t Care About Us.” The Brazilian government tried to stop him, saying it would embarrass the country, and even Pelé opposed the shoot. But Jackson kept going anyway. With local support and Marcinho VP’s protection, the community of Dona Marta helped him film in safety. Today, a bronze Michael Jackson statue stands on that hillside, proof that the attempt to erase the favela failed.
