(\u201cThat\u2019s right, Elaine. White lotus. Yam-yam. Shanghai Sally.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Puddy and Peterman, baby. Elaine\u2019s situationship and boss, together at last.<\/p>\n<p>While they never had a scene together on the show, \u201cSeinfeld\u201d stars and real-life pals Patrick Warburton and John O\u2019Hurley will unite on stage for a pair of shows right here in New England. (High five.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Catch \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/events-ricomedyconnection-com.seatengine.com\/events\/109058\">Puddy &amp; Peterman: Crass n\u2019 Class<\/a>\u201d March 28 at Providence\u2019s Comedy Connection; the event was just added to an epic four-day comedy fest in Providence, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lilrhodylaughriot.com\/\">Lil Rhody Laugh Riot<\/a>.\u00a0Or, if you want to stay in Mass., the duo just added a show the night before, March 27 at the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/norwoodstage.com\/an-evening-with-puddy-and-peterman\">Norwood Theatre<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Both also have local ties: O\u2019Hurley, 70, is a New Englander. Born in Kittery, Maine, he grew up in Natick and West Hartford, Conn., before graduating from Providence College in \u201976, the only theater student at the time. (\u201cConsequently, I won the theater award.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>While Warburton, 60, was born in New Jersey and raised in California, he voices Joe the cop in the Rhode Island-set \u201cFamily Guy.\u201d (I\u2019ll count it.)<\/p>\n<p>I called the duo for a wide-ranging interview: We talked \u201cSeinfeld\u201d auditions, favorite episodes, Peterman monologues, why Warburton\u2019s parents petitioned to get him off the air, and more.\u00a0 I\u2019ll note the call started with just me and O\u2019Hurley. Warburton dialed in later, apologizing that he had the wrong time. (It was the AM\/PM, man!) He merges in where noted. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boston-com-these-are-the-first-puddy-peterman-team-ups-how-did-this-come-together\">Boston.com: These are the first Puddy\/Peterman team-ups. How did this come together?<\/h4>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> Patrick and I never worked together on the show, but we\u2019re very close friends. He\u2019s just starting off in stand-up this year. So I said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we do something together. You take one act, I\u2019ll take the other, we\u2019ll come back on stage together for a Q&amp;A.\u201d We\u2019re so distinctly different \u2014 hence the crass n\u2019 class. So he does his style of comedy; I do mine. I\u2019ll do Peterman monologues, crazy stories of my misspent youth.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-graduated-from-pc-and-you-re-back-often-i-know-you-love-federal-hill-nbsp\"><strong>You graduated from PC<\/strong>,<strong> and you\u2019re back often. I know you love Federal Hill.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When I\u2019m in town, I\u2019m at<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opentable.com\/andinos-restaurant\"> Andino\u2019s<\/a>. I have the corner stool at the bar. I see old friends, talk about the old days.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-that-s-awesome-you-mentioned-peterman-monologues-which-stand-out-nbsp\">That\u2019s awesome. You mentioned Peterman monologues. Which stand out?\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>The episode where Rob Schneider plays my hard-of-hearing assistant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-classic-episode-the-friar-s-club\">A classic episode, \u201cThe Friar\u2019s Club.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>I thought he and Elaine [were dating]. I said to her: <em>[breaks into Peterman cadence] <\/em>\u201cWho among us hasn\u2019t stopped in the break room from time to time to nibble on a love newton?\u201d I slapped down two tickets to the Karamazov Brothers Circus, and tell her she and Bob can knock off a little early. [<em>In<\/em> <em>Peterman cadence<\/em>] Elaine, don\u2019t worry.\u00a0 I, too, am no stranger to love on the clock. As a young lad, my father apprenticed me to a honey factory in Belize. The chief beekeeper was this horrible hag of a woman with gnarled teeth and a giant wart that she called her nose \u2014<em> hoo hoo! \u2014 <\/em>she was not attractive, even by backward standards. But love is truly blind, Elaine, and as the days went on, working closer and closer together, a sweet smell of honey in the air, I knew I had to have that horrible creature. And I did. So you and Bob, have a good time tonight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-that-s-awesome-nbsp\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] That\u2019s awesome.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Great writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-was-your-favorite-peterman-episode\">What was your favorite Peterman episode?<\/h4>\n<p>I like the wedding cake episode where George had the Frogger [\u201cThe Frogger\u201d].\u00a0 I love the monologue <em>[in Peterman cadence<\/em>], \u201cDo you have any idea what happens to a butter-based frosting after six decades in a poorly ventilated British basement? I have a feeling that what you are going through will be punishment enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-your-memory-is-amazing-nbsp\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] Your memory is amazing.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>I love the whole way that\u00a0 episode was written, directed, and presented.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-with-george-trying-to-get-the-frogger-across-the-street-like-a-frogger-game\">With George trying to get the Frogger across the street like a Frogger game.<\/h4>\n<p>And the semi truck coming in and destroying it. [<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-how-did-that-peterman-cadence-come-to-you-how-did-the-character-come-to-you-i-know-it-was-supposed-to-be-a-one-off-appearance-nbsp\">So how did that Peterman cadence come to you? How did the character come to you? I know it was supposed to be a one-off appearance.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>It was, but \u201cSeinfeld\u201d never knows. They throw it out there and see what sticks. In my case, they said \u201cWe want him to sound the way the catalog is written.\u201d This Hemingway-style prose to sell an Oxford button-down. It just sounded to me like a \u201940s radio drama combined with a bad <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Charles-Kuralt\">Charles Kuralt<\/a>. It made sense to do it seriously, as though you were reading prized literature.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-david-s-office-called-you-after-your-series-was-canceled-a-whole-new-ballgame-nbsp\">Larry David\u2019s office called you after your series was canceled, \u201cA Whole New Ballgame.\u201d\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Right. Larry David\u2019s office called [my manager] and said, \u201cWe have this guest-star spot for tomorrow.\u201d I told my manager, \u201cTell them no. I\u2019m licking my wounds.\u201d The next morning my manager called me and said: \u201cI never told them. They\u2019re waiting for you.\u201d I got there, and they hadn\u2019t even finished the episode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oh-wow\">Oh wow.<\/h4>\n<p>Oh yeah. They were the most disorganized show on television.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-i-didn-t-know-that\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] I didn\u2019t know that.<\/h4>\n<p>They hadn\u2019t finished writing. The Peterman stuff was very skeletal. It was just the scene where he and Elaine meet on the street, and another scene in a restaurant. So really, the character developed off the catalog itself \u2014 that was the only thing I could hold on to.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-by-your-second-episode-the-secret-code-i-feel-like-you-had-him-in-full\">By your second episode, \u201cThe Secret Code,\u201d I feel like you had him in full.<\/h4>\n<p>That episode was a beautifully flushed-out script. I mean, you really got a sense of who Peterman was. \u201cMother had taken a lover up in Brazil. Perhaps Bosco was his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-you-also-had-an-ad-lib-in-that-episode\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] You also had an ad-lib in that episode.<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, when Elaine cancels and it\u2019s just [George and Jerry dining with Peterman]. \u201cI\u2019ll tell the ma\u00eetre d\u2019 it\u2019ll just be the three bulls.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-must-ve-loved-that-line\">Larry must\u2019ve loved that line.<\/h4>\n<p>Yeah, that was fun. But that was the spirit of the show: Throw it in, if it sticks, it stays.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-while-you-were-on-the-show-did-you-have-a-sense-of-the-magic-the-longevity-it-would-have\">While you were on the show, did you have a sense of the magic, the longevity it would have?<\/h4>\n<p>No, because I\u2019d never watched the show. When I left that first table reading, I called my manager and said, \u201cThis is the number one show on television? It\u2019s not funny.\u201d And in truth, the show doesn\u2019t <em>read<\/em> funny. It\u2019s not \u201cGolden Girls\u201d-style, tee up the joke for a punchline. It\u2019s funny if you play every scene like a drama, because the characters are so passionate about things that have absolutely no consequence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-true\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] True.<\/h4>\n<p>[Fans] always talk about the fact that the show wasn\u2019t that good in the beginning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exactly-season-1-is-so-off-it-doesn-t-feel-like-seinfeld-at-all\">Exactly. Season 1 is so off. It doesn\u2019t feel like \u201cSeinfeld\u201d at all.<\/h4>\n<p>The reason was, they weren\u2019t playing it for the stakes you had to play it at. They were playing it at a five or six on the dial\u2014 it needed to be at 11. You watch early episodes, they\u2019re just a little <em>eh.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-agree-very-flat-they-didn-t-really-find-their-voice-until-a-few-seasons-in-do-you-have-a-favorite-season\">I agree. Very flat. They didn\u2019t really find their voice until a few seasons in. Do you have a favorite season?<\/h4>\n<p>I thought in season 9 they were just hitting their stride. But Jerry was executive producer\/star\/co-writer, so he had a different perspective on how much of his life the show was taking up. We had enough for syndication, and he wanted to go out on top. But I thought that last season, we were really hitting our stride\u2014 everything was just a little more lunatic, as evidenced by \u201cThe Frogger.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-great-point-do-you-have-a-favorite-character\">Great point. Do you have a favorite character?<\/h4>\n<p>George made the show. Kramer\u2019s physicality was singular \u2014 but the key to the show was George\u2019s passion. He had to be passionately mediocre. If you gave that role to any other chubby character actor in Hollywood, that series would have crashed. George had to drive that show being everyman, swinging from the middle rung on the ladder of life, having screwed his way to the middle.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-that-s-good\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] That\u2019s good.<\/h4>\n<p><em>[Warburton merges into the call]\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Apologies, I had the wrong time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> It\u2019s OK, I already told her most of the high points of your life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>I can\u2019t think of a better spokesman.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patrick-tell-me-how-you-got-involved-in-this-providence-show\">Patrick, tell me how you got involved in this Providence show?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Well, it was John\u2019s idea. We have different sensibilities and senses of humor. I think it\u2019s a fun collaboration. We\u2019ll each be able to do our own thing. It\u2019s great to finally do something together, because we never worked together on the show. And throughout the years, I\u2019ve spent more time with John than any other cast member. We\u2019re in similar circles, have done charity events together, play golf together,\u00a0 even though he\u2019s so refined and cultured.<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> Stick up his a\u2014. [<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>And I play dimwits. So it\u2019s fun to combine the two personalities on stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-any-others-planned-at-this-point\">Any others planned at this point?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton<\/em>: I just started headlining about six months ago; I\u2019m beginning to get overbooked. John is busy, too \u2014 he could be the next Broadway show tomorrow. It\u2019s not like he needs to run around with me.<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley: <\/em>Hand in hand. [<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-patrick-what-sparked-a-stand-up-career-now\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] Patrick, what sparked a stand-up career now?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>I felt like I was getting a bit complacent, enjoying a retired-ish life since COVID. I needed to do something. I started doing 15 minutes at LA joints. Then I got my first offer to headline a 500-seat club. I\u2019m no spring chicken, so I decided to dive in \u2014 turns out, I had 70 minutes. I\u2019ve been going full-force. You get better and sharper the more you do it. You learn the best writer for you is you.<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> Ultimately, it has to take the shape of <em>you<\/em>. When I\u2019m putting stuff together, I throw out a lot of really funny jokes because they\u2019re not me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton:<\/em> I\u2019ll take \u2019em, John.<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley: <\/em>[<em>laughs<\/em>] You have to stay true to a style.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patrick-how-did-you-land-on-seinfeld\">Patrick, how did you land on \u201cSeinfeld\u201d?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>At the time, I was bouncing around [different shows], so fortunately for me, I didn\u2019t have to go into the casting [pool]. I got a producer call, meaning my first audition was walking into a room with Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I distinctly remember sitting on the couch watching the show with my wife two weeks before that, looking at her and saying, \u201cDammit, why can\u2019t I get on a show like \u2018Seinfeld\u2019?\u201d Two weeks later, I had that audition. It was for a one-off, but fortunately they liked the character. I only did nine episodes.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wow-really-puddy-seemed-like-such-a-huge-part-of-the-show-nbsp\">Wow, really? Puddy seemed like such a huge part of the show.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley: <\/em>That character, over the last three or four seasons, was a character that shaped the show. Puddy was a strong force. You say you only did nine, but it was nine very strong shows.<\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Well, thank you, John.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-true-i-can-t-believe-it-was-only-nine-what-are-your-favorite-puddy-episodes\">It\u2019s true. I can\u2019t believe it was only nine. What are your favorite Puddy episodes?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Perhaps when I sold Jerry his car [\u201cThe Dealership\u201d]. And maybe the face-painter episode, \u201cFusilli Jerry.\u201d\u00a0 I like the religious one, too. [\u201cThe Burning.\u201d] That hit close to home.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-those-are-all-fan-favorites-so-did-the-character-come-to-you-right-away-did-you-know-who-he-was\">Those are all fan-favorites. So did the character come to you right away? Did you know who he was?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>I remember being in the [casting] room, seeing more of your Tony or Vinny-type New York City auto-mechanics. I knew that wasn\u2019t the direction I was going to go. I gave him a different voice, which seemed to appeal to them.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-the-squint\">And the squint.<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton:<\/em> [<em>laughs<\/em>] That squint I carry almost everywhere I go.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-mentioned-the-religious-episode-hitting-close-to-home-your-parents-didn-t-like-your-first-episode-where-puddy-steals-the-move-from-jerry\">You mentioned the religious episode hitting close to home. Your parents didn\u2019t like your first episode, where Puddy steals \u201cthe move\u201d from Jerry.<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>That first episode, I got two letters, what I call hate-mail. One was from a politician who said, \u201cI can only imagine how disappointed your parents are.\u201d And I guess he was right because the other piece of hate-mail was a six-page letter from my father letting me know he was disappointed.<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> [<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs\">[<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>My dad said there was no sanctity. <em>Where\u2019s the sanctity?<\/em> My father was in a monastery for three months before he went into medicine. And my mother is worse.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-nbsp\">[<em>laughs<\/em>]\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>She\u2019s 87 now. She said, \u201cYou probably discuss me in your stand-up.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWithout you, Mom, my show is 15 minutes.\u201c<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-nbsp-your-parents-had-a-problem-with-family-guy\">[<em>laughs<\/em>]\u00a0 Your parents had a problem with \u201cFamily Guy.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Oh, they begged me for <em>years<\/em> [to quit]. They see it as strictly blasphemous. I could never explain satire to them. I remember my dad left a voicemail [about an episode]: \u201cPatrick, God is sitting in a La-Z-Boy chair getting ready to m\u2014 with a bottle of lotion. I <em>wish you would get off that show.\u201d <\/em>Click. He hung up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-nbsp-0\">[<em>laughs<\/em>]\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley: <\/em>[<em>laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><em>Warburton:<\/em> The conversation I could never have with my dad is: \u201cGod is not a guy with a beard sitting in a La-Z-Boy. This is satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>O\u2019Hurley:<\/em> [<em>laughs<\/em>] It\u2019s so funny that of all people to have the type of parents he had \u2014 it\u2019s God\u2019s great practical joke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-patrick-family-guy-is-a-huge-rhode-island-connection-have-you-been-to-rhode-island\">[<em>laughs<\/em>] Patrick, \u201cFamily Guy\u201d is a huge Rhode Island connection. Have you been to Rhode Island?<\/h4>\n<p><em>Warburton: <\/em>Oh, yeah, I love it. I spent three months living in the Biltmore in Providence while filming a Disney film with Peter Dinklage, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0467110\/\">Underdog.<\/a>\u201d I had a great time. At the time, in front of the Biltmore they had roller derby. I sort of got to know all the gals on the roller derby team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My very conservative father visited for dinner.
