EDC Las Vegas is the Super Bowl of EDM festivals<\/p>\n

Music is the best way to travel. In other words, music festivals can be a conduit through which to see the world. Whether it\u2019s a trip to the Caribbean, the French Alps or Thailand; an urban vacation in Paris, Berlin or Dubai; or the perfect backdrop for celebrating the 4th of July, Labor Day and New Year\u2019s Eve, a music festival makes traveling to the places you\u2019ve always wanted to visit that much better. Fortunately, these celebrations of dance and personal expression take place pretty much everywhere you\u2019d want to go.<\/p>\n

My 2024 travel schedule included EDM festivals in Utah, Las Vegas, St. Martin, Miami and San Diego. For each event I was focused on the VIP experience and offering. What I found is that most could have done better. My sense is there\u2019s a market for service tiers that eliminate the stress, discomfort and inconvenience of attending music festivals. This would include transportation to and from the venue, quick entry to the venue, convenient restroom access, comfortable places to sit (and lay down), proximity to the artists\/stages and premium food and beverage options. Promoters can do better in catering to a clientele willing to pay for premium experiences.<\/p>\n

That said, I saw some amazing performances from artists including Dom Dolla, Fred Again, Fisher, Cloonee, Gryffin, Mau P, Magit Cacoon, Subtronics, Wax Motif, Fleur Shore and many more. 2025 is certain to be a banner year for EDM festivals, several of which are already selling out. These are six of them to plan for starting in March and running through New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n

SXM Festival<\/strong><\/a>: St. Martin\/Sint Maarten, Caribbean, March 12-16<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are mega festivals like EDC in Vegas. There are genre festivals like Das Energi in Utah. And then there\u2019s the one-of-a-kind SXM Festival on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. Scheduled for a time when most in the Northern Hemisphere is ready to put winter behind them, SXM offers five days of outdoor raving across multiple venues on a French\/Dutch island best known for its airport. Indeed, you\u2019ll want to book window seats for the stunning approach and takeoff over the aqua-blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.<\/p>\n

SXM serves to kick off the EDM festival season in the final weeks of winter and just days before the start of Miami Music Week. The main stage highlight from last year was Magit Cacoon<\/a>\u2019s high-energy, melodic house set at Happy Bay. This contrasted the more vibey afro and deep house flavor that set the tone for the 2024 festival. Cacoon\u2019s big drops were a welcome departure.<\/p>\n

Whether at the main stage or one of the satellite parties, the SXM vibe is intimate. It\u2019s big enough to attract top talent but small enough that you\u2019ll become familiar and even make friends with your fellow SXMers after five days of partying together. Fleur Shore<\/a>\u2019s groovy, boiler-room-esque house set to close out the Villa Party was another highlight, where tequila bottles were being shared by those dancing around the DJ booth.<\/p>\n

SXM takes place around the clock, from sunrise beach sets to daytime parties at more intimate venues to the two main stages on the beach at Happy Bay each night. For 2025, the artist I\u2019m most excited to see is Chris Luno. He\u2019s produced some legendary YouTube sets including a recent drive down PCH<\/a> in a party bus just before the tragic fires decimated the landscape of Malibu and the Pacific Palisades.<\/p>\n

While there are several recognizable artists in this year\u2019s lineup, the best part of SXM is the element of artist discovery. The talent roster leans toward Europe, so that\u2019s the overall vibe. This sets it apart from most North American festivals. So while I\u2019m a tech house fan (and DJ), SXM introduced me to several melodic and afro house artists that I\u2019m still following today. Unlike other festivals, the destination is the major draw and a primary reason to attend. The music is secondary…until you see these artists, and then it flips.<\/p>\n

Venue: <\/strong>The island of St. Martin\/Sint Maarten<\/p>\n

Talent: <\/strong>Camelphat, Tinlicker (DJ Set), Chris Luno, <\/strong>Danny Tenaglia<\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>SXM\u2019s VIP experience consists of a series of premium parties at satellite venues across the island, plus the option to buy tables<\/a> at the main venue in Happy Bay. In order to buy tickets to the satellite parties you\u2019ll first need to purchase the five-day festival pass. The Villa Party is the best of them. It takes place at a mansion overlooking the Caribbean. It starts during the day and runs through a spectacular sunset well into the evening with a variety of entertainment. Premium food and drinks are available, and there are multiple heated pools. So dress accordingly. This year, London-based Defected Records<\/a> will be taking over the Villa Party.<\/p>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>The island offers a range of different villa options on both the French and Dutch sides. St. Martin Blue<\/a> is the local source for luxury villas. Others can be found on Airbnb<\/a> and should be booked directly. There are no villa or hotel packages.<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>Flights can be booked to Princess Juliana International Airport. Once on the island, taxis can be scheduled through the SXM app<\/a>, and everything is close by. The island itself is only 37 square miles.<\/p>\n

EDC Las Vegas<\/a>: Las Vegas, Nevada, May 16-18<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s a mysterious \u201cSpecial Guest\u201d spot in Saturday\u2019s lineup for EDC Las Vegas 2024. This artist is set to play the Circuit Grounds stage just ahead of Dom Dolla, who is the evening\u2019s big headliner. While Kinetic Field is technically the main stage, this is definitely where you want to be. Given all of the known artists in EDC\u2019s vast lineup across 10 stages, this special guest would have to be pretty special to earn that designation and open for Dom Dolla. At least that was my logic as we positioned ourselves on the Tao Group Marquee Skydeck<\/a> for the big reveal.<\/p>\n

At 11:30pm local time, Fred Again<\/a> takes the stage to raucous applause. The UK artist had been blowing up all year, in general, and specifically on TikTok. His music is a menagerie of EDM styles and genres with no particular bent or preference. It\u2019s deep house and UK R&B. It\u2019s house and dance\/electronic. It\u2019s French Urban Pop and Alternative\/Indie. He\u2019s impossible to pigeonhole. His signature tracks have enticing vocal hooks e.g. Delilah<\/a> (pull me out of this) and Marea<\/a> (we\u2019ve lost dancing), both of which feature in his EDC set. But these tracks just lay a foundation, wherein Fred Again adds other musical layers while inspiring the crowd to sing along. The piano is his preferred instrument, as his shows feature a combination of recorded music with live performances on the keyboard, mixer, drum machine, etc. I wouldn\u2019t call him a DJ, and he\u2019s much more than a producer. His shows feel as much like therapy sessions as they do concerts. You come away feeling like you\u2019ve experienced art.<\/p>\n

The special guest was rumored to be Skrillex<\/a>, a frequent collaborator with Fred Again, so the next best thing for Skrillex fans was for Fred Again to drop both Push<\/a> and Rumble<\/a> into his set with his own personal spin. This is precisely what the EDC crowd at Circuit Grounds wanted at those moments.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a baseball fan, you want to see a game at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. If you\u2019re a Formula One fan, you want to see a race at Silverstone or Monza. And if you\u2019re an EDM fan, you want to rave at EDC Vegas at least once in your life. This is the Super Bowl of EDM festivals.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s continue with the football analogy to best illustrate the VIP experience. Tao Group\u2019s Marquee Skydeck is available at the big stages, Kinetic Field, Circuit Grounds and Neon Garden. These are elevated platform with private tables, bottle service and other conveniences. It\u2019s well worth the cost and, in my view, the only way to experience EDC. However, it\u2019s the equivalent of a skybox at a football stadium in that you\u2019re somewhat removed from the action. Particularly at Kinetic Field, you\u2019re so far back that you can\u2019t see the artist behind the decks, and there aren\u2019t screens to show them in action. The screens would be nice but closer proximity would be ideal.<\/p>\n

EDC attracts more than 500,000 fans across the three days, 10 stages and some 200 artists. Navigating the venue after about 11pm can be challenging, so I recommend picking your stage for the night, getting there and staying there before it becomes nearly impossible to get from one stage to the next.<\/p>\n

Venue: <\/strong>Las Vegas Motor Speedway<\/a><\/p>\n

Talent: <\/strong>Blond:ish, <\/strong>Cloonee, Disco Lines, Dom Dolla, Fisher, Hot Since 82, James Hype, Korolova, Max Syler, Mau P, Odd Mob, Vintage Culture<\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>Tao Group\u2019s Marquee EDC Skydeck<\/a> is the best way to see EDC. It\u2019s available at the three biggest stages, Kinetic Field, Circuit Grounds and Neon Garden. The biggest platform and installation is at Kinetic aka the main stage. The best views of the artists, however, are found at Circuit Grounds. These tickets offer access to other VIP areas, as well.<\/p>\n

The music never stops at Hotel EDC<\/p>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>The VIP EDC experience starts with Hotel EDC<\/a>, which is hosted and organized by Vibee at the Virgin Hotel Las Vegas<\/a>. This is a bona fide party hotel, which carries the legacy of the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas of the \u201890s era and its legendary pool complex<\/a>. The Hotel EDC experience is quite immersive with DJs spinning in the lobby, an assortment of branded swag, such as plush robes and star lights, included in your room and your fellow EDC \u201cheadliners\u201d filling the hotel. Hotel EDC will host four days of pool parties with DJ sets from Gorgon City, Adam Ten, Tchami, Malaa, Audien, Adventure Club and more. While this isn\u2019t the most luxurious property in Vegas, it\u2019s the center of the EDC action with parties going around the clock.<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>The worst part of EDC is traffic on I-15 getting to and from the venue. Thankfully, there are better ways. For a unique experience of its own, you can schedule helicopter transfers with Maverick Helicopters<\/a>. In addition to epic views of the Strip and the expansive EDC venue, you\u2019ll fly over the I-15 traffic that you\u2019re avoiding. The most convenient option, however, is EDC\u2019s own private car service<\/a>. This picks up at the Virgin Hotel, MGM Grand and Resorts World and drops off at exclusive VIP entrances to the venue. This private route goes through the Air Force base and takes less than 30 minutes door to door. When you\u2019re ready to head back to your hotel, just show up at the VIP entrance, and you\u2019re out of there with little or no wait.<\/p>\n

Electric Forest<\/a>: Rothbury, Michigan, June 19-22<\/h2>\n

Electric Forest is another one-of-a-kind festival that every EDM fan should have on their bucket list. One of the more compelling aspects is that it\u2019s open to all ages, which makes it an ideal family vacation if you have teenage EDM fans who want to see Fisher and Ti\u00ebsto without using fake IDs.<\/p>\n

While organizers are introducing hotel options with shuttle service for 2025, Electric Forest is all about the camping\/glamping experience in the forest. This also means its an immersive, 24\/7 EDM experience for three days.<\/p>\n

Venue: <\/strong>Double JJ Resort <\/a><\/p>\n

Talent: <\/strong>Fisher, Ti\u00ebsto, Blond:ish, Cloonee<\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>The \u201cGood Life<\/a>\u201d VIP offering includes exclusive parties, happy hours, shuttles around the venue, upgraded shower facilities and air-conditioned bathrooms, Wednesday early arrival, premium viewing areas at the stages and so much more. This package addresses most of my concerns about proper VIP offerings at festivals.<\/p>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>The Good Life camping options range from bringing your own tent to renting a pre-set, air-conditioned tents, RVs and bungalos.<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>You can fly into Muskegon County Airport (MKG), and Rothbury is a 30-minute drive from there.<\/p>\n

Raving in Europe just hits different, especially when you\u2019re partying alongside 100,000 people from 105 countries across five stages in the city of Turin in Northern Italy. The Futur Festival was voted best International Festival at the DJ Awards in 2019 and has been running since 2009, when it debuted as a New Year\u2019s Eve event. For 2025, it\u2019s conveniently held during our 4th of July holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

My Forbes colleague Everett Porter describes Turin<\/a> as \u201can elegant, magical, and uncrowded Italian city of vast piazzas, arcades and Art Nouveau-era cafes, with the snow-capped Alps in the background. That\u2019s a pretty good description of the Italian city of Turin in the country\u2019s northwestern corner.\u201d Indeed, this region of Italy deserves a visit independent of the festival, and time should be set aside before or after to fully explore.<\/p>\n

The festival takes place in Parco Dora<\/a>, Turin\u2019s largest urban park. It is located in the city center and described as an \u201copen-air art installation\u201d because of its 30-meter-high steel pillars that are remnants of its days as a strip steel mill.<\/p>\n

Talent: <\/strong>Anyma, Boris Brejcha, Diplo, Mau P, Meduza, Miss Monique, Peggy Gou, Solomun, Vintage Culture B2B Beltran<\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>One of the key reasons I chose to feature Futur Festival is because its VIP Experience<\/a> addresses most of the concerns I initially express about VIP offerings. It checks every box: a dedicated entrance to the festival with VIP terraces and lounge; lockers and luxury toilets; premium cocktail bar, restaurant and beauty bar; and shuttle service to and from the center of Torino. There are multiple tiers of VIP, one of which is the Art & Techno Experience that packages a 5-star hotel, gourmet dining and guided tours of galleries and art collections.<\/p>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>The 100-year-old Grand Hotel Sitea<\/a> in Turin is one of the best five-star hotel options.<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>You can fly directly to Turin, Italy. VIP tiers include shuttle service to and from the venue. Otherwise, public transportation is widely available.<\/p>\n

Das Energi<\/a>: Salt Lake City, Utah, August 8-9<\/h2>\n

Das Energi is the premier bass music festival in the US with a heavy emphasis on dubstep. Admittedly, I\u2019m not a fan of the genre, but the mountain west serves at its epicenter. That said, Subtronics headlined the festival in 2024, and his style of dubstep works for me. Many of the tracks are familiar songs mixed into dubstep, so the more mind-splitting dubstep sounds are balanced with more palatable house beats and riffs. For me, Subtronics became an ideal gateway artist to the genre.<\/p>\n

Das Energi takes place along the shores of the Great Salt Lake and features three stages, two outside and one inside the Saltair concert facility. One of the key moments at Das Energi is watching the sun set over the Lake as it lights up the Wasatch Mountains to the east. The open area between stages offers plenty of places to sit, lay down and vibe out in between sets.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that Das Energi promoter V2 Presents<\/a> hosts a series of festivals at the Saltair and other venues throughout the year. Get Lucky<\/a> (March 7-8) will feature Camelphat, Will Sparks and my friend Audeamus. Get Funky<\/a> (June 21-22) tends to feature house artists; last year it was Kaskade and Wax Motif. And then Get Freaky<\/a> (October TBD) is timed for Halloween. V2 also recently hosted the legend Benny Benassi at The Marquis<\/a> in Park City, which was one of the best shows since that venue reopened.<\/p>\n

Venue: <\/strong>The Great Saltair<\/a><\/p>\n

Talent (2024):<\/strong> Subtronics, Adventure Club, Bonnie X Clyde, Nora en Pure, Seven Lions, Sarah Lies <\/strong><\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>Packages include VIP entry to skip the lines; artist meet-and-greets; and private lounges, bars, and viewing areas throughout the festival grounds. The VIP area with tables is elevated around the main stage.<\/p>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>The Kimpton Monaco Salt Lake City<\/a> is located in a walkable part of downtown with easy access to the freeways for getting to and from the Saltair. The restaurant Bambara serves brunch and dinner, while The Vault offers and intimate bar setting with craft cocktails.<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>You can easily get a ride share to the festival. However, you\u2019ll want to schedule a car service pickup for your return, as it can be challenging to get a ride share when the festival is letting out. There are also shuttles to and from the venue, which pick up and drop off at SKY Nightclub.<\/p>\n

Proper NYE<\/a>, San Diego, California, December 31 – January 1<\/h2>\n

When Proper NYE takes over Petco Park<\/p>\n

Proper NYE<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Proper NYE takes place at Petco Park in San Diego for New Year\u2019s Eve and New Year\u2019s Day. The location is ideal for a number of reasons, not least of which is SoCal weather in December. Daytime temperatures can get into the 70s, while nights can be dip into the 50s. Given that it\u2019s an outdoor venue, you\u2019ll want to pack some extra layers for your rave fits.<\/p>\n

The best thing about Proper NYE is that the festival is pretty much self contained within the San Diego party zone known as the Gaslight Quarter. Everything you need is in walking distance. I\u2019d recommend arriving on the 30th so you can experience the local bars and legendary nightlife scene before the festival kicks off on the 31st. The Hard Rock Hotel is the ideal place to stay, as the venue is just a block from the stadium. The VIP entrance is located on the far side of the venue, and you\u2019ll want to walk around the east (inland) side to get there.<\/p>\n

For 2024, all the artists I wanted to see were playing on field at the main stage. Additional stages were located around the sports complex. Cloonee played his set leading up to midnight, which proved to be the highlight of the two-day festival given that the UK DJ\/producer released the tech house masterpiece Stephanie featuring Young M.A. just a couple weeks prior. Eric Prydz\u2019s set started at 11:30pm and took us over the line into 2025. Dom Dolla closed out the show on New Years Day.<\/p>\n

Venue: <\/strong>Petco Park<\/a><\/p>\n

Talent (2024): <\/strong>Cloonee, Dom Dolla, Mau P, John Summit, Kaskade, Charlotte de Witte<\/p>\n

VIP: <\/strong>The main stage in Petco Park features a VIP viewing area in front of the stage, which gets you closer to the artists and offers more room to move. There is also a VIP bar area with propane heaters located just behind the stage. Though, in 2024, it did not offer any seating despite having plenty of room.<\/p>\n

The Rockstar Suite<\/p>\n

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Accommodations: <\/strong>If you\u2019re traveling to a concert or rave and there\u2019s a Hard Rock Hotel next to the venue, why would you stay anywhere else? What\u2019s more, if you\u2019re coming to Proper NYE with a group, you\u2019ll want to book a Rock Star Suite<\/a> at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego<\/a>. These stylish and expansive suites feature sitting and dining areas with a wet bar and Bluetooth sound system for DJing a private party. It\u2019s ideal for pregaming and after parties. What other hotel offers electric guitars as an amenity?<\/p>\n

Transportation: <\/strong>The Hard Rock Hotel is a 20-minute drive from San Diego International Airport. At which point everything is in walking distance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
