This weekend, the biggest event in American sport, the Super Bowl, took place at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. And whether you were rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs as they went for the three-peat, flying with the Philadelphia Eagles, or sleeping soundly as the quarters crept by, each and every one of us emerged victorious. Why? Because, as ever, Super Bowl Sunday brought with it an absolute tonne of celebrity ads and movie star spots as the biggest companies in the world duked it out to make the marketing most out of the biggest show on the box.<\/p>\n

Now, as has become something of an Empire tradition, we’re here to run you through the best movie spots and commercials to hit our screens in the run-up to Super Bowl LIX. Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning \u2013 Big Game Spot<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This latest look at The Final Reckoning<\/a> has brief bursts of brand new action, another glimpse of Mission III\u2019s Rabbit\u2019s Foot, a thrilling Pom Klementieff smackdown \u2013 and, best of all, fresh looks at that jaw-dropping biplane sequence. Top Gun: Maverick<\/a> director Joseph Kosinski moves from jets to jet-fuelled Formula 1 driving with this summer\u2019s F1. (Are race cars jet-fuelled? We don\u2019t know, we\u2019re a film publication, people.) This largely wordless teaser lets the need-for-speed action do the talking, but promises a thunderous lap around the track with Brad Pitt in the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n

Lilo & Stitch \u2013 Stitch Runs Loose At The Big Game<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now this is how you do a Super Bowl spot. In keeping with the anarchic marketing for the original Lilo & Stitch<\/a>, the live-action remake (from Marcel The Shell<\/a> director Dean Fleischer Camp) is letting its furry blue hell-raiser loose in all kinds of places he shouldn\u2019t be. Like the Super Bowl field, where he causes all kids of chaos. \u201cNow he\u2019s gone, and driving a cart, uh-oh!\u201d is perfect Stitch calamity. Meega, nala kweesta!<\/p>\n

How To Train Your Dragon \u2013 Big Game Spot<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Also on the live-action remake train, here\u2019s a new peek at Toothless and Hiccup\u2019s big adventure. A full trailer is promised for Wednesday, but for now this gives us a blast of \u2018Test Drive\u2019 on the soundtrack, gorgeous soaring shots of Toothless in flight, and iconic moments from the beloved original. Here\u2019s hoping director Dean De Blois can keep the magic he conjured in animated form as he adapts his own work into a new medium.<\/p>\n

Jurassic World Rebirth \u2013 The Big Game Spot<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We already got a full Rebirth trailer<\/a> earlier in the week, but here are some highlights condensed into one minute. Raptor claws! Dilophosaurus frills! Mosasaur fins! And \u2013 of course \u2013 the snapping jaws of the Tyrannosaurus Rex!<\/p>\n

Hellman’s \u2014 Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal<\/h2>\n

Nostalgia and advertising go together like Harry Burns and Sally Albright, a fact proven by condiment connoisseurs Hellman’s inspired When Harry Met Sally<\/a> spot. The ad sees Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reprise their iconic roles as they recreate their infamous trip to Katz’s Delicatessen, the difference being that this time it’s the thick white stuff (steady!) that’s causing a scene. Bonus points for Sydney Sweeney popping up with a perfectly timed “I’ll have what she’s having!” at the end.<\/p>\n

Booking.com \u2014 The Muppets<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Short, sweet, and very muppetational, holiday firm Booking.com made their 30 seconds count this year with the help of our beloved Muppets. Kermit on banjo, Miss Piggy being a diva, Statler and Waldorf grouching up the place, Gonzo shooting off as he delivers the company’s “Booking dot yeah” sign-off \u2014 what more could you want?<\/p>\n

Ford \u2014 Glen Powell<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Easily the silliest and yet somehow also perhaps the most inspired commercial at this year’s Super Bowl, Ford’s promo starring man-of-the-moment Glen Powell is just a giddy delight. Beginning with Powell in a blue dress and pig tails, this madcap riff on Goldilocks and the Three Bears sees the Hit Man star reimagine the classic fairytale as he puts the pedal to the metal in three different Ram trucks. There’s dragons. There’s volcano jumps. There’s woodcraft. There’s CG bears. And, most importantly, there’s Powell channelling his inner Geralt of Rivia in a lovely long wig. Cracking stuff.<\/p>\n

Jeep \u2014 Harrison Ford (Directed by James Mangold)<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Harrison Ford reunites with his Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny director James Mangold in this heartstring tugging ad for Jeep. If you didn’t know this was trying to sell you a car, it’d function perfectly as a standalone Mangold short film. A quiet, beautifully shot meditation on the passage of time and the wisdom that comes with age, this is the thematic preoccupations that have dominated much of Mangold’s career captured in microcosm. And Ford is just brilliant, naturally.<\/p>\n

Uber Eats \u2014 Matthew McConaughey, Greta Gerwig, Charli XCX, Kevin Bacon<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew McConaughey enlists the help of Barbie<\/a> auteur Greta Gerwig to help bring his wild conspiracy theory \u2014 that American football’s entire existence and every fibre of its being is predicated on a desire to make people crave food (crazy, we know!) \u2014 to life in Uber Eats’ brilliantly batty ad. Not only is McConaughey on better than alright, alright, alright form as his imagination sends him on a journey through time, but the spot’s guest stars \u2014 Charli XCX, actual Kevin Bacon, Martha Stewart, and even Hot Ones’ Sean Evans \u2014 are all perfectly placed. It’s a doozy!<\/p>\n

Ray-Ban x Meta \u2014 Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, the jury is still out on AI and the Metaverse (just check out our Future of Cinema<\/a> feature for more on that conversation), but we’re a sucker for the Hollywood Chrises and this Ray-Ban x Meta glasses ad gives us two of ’em on top form. Asgardian of the Galaxy Chris Hemsworth and Guardian of the Galaxy Chris Pratt spiral into an existential crisis in this absurdist bit that has them questioning which of them is real and what exactly art is in our modern times. (Also no, Kris Jenner is not suddenly a Hollywood Chris \u2014 sorry momager!)<\/p>\n

Squarespace \u2014 Barry Keoghan<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Not much needs to be said to sell Squarespace’s pastoral pick for their game day commercial. Barry Keoghan, travelling on a mule through what looks very much like the titular isle from The Banshees Of Inisherin<\/a>, adopts the persona of Squarespace Man, a borderline problematically stereotypical Irishman and storyteller spreading the good word about the website building platform. Sadly not actually a sequel to Martin McDonagh’s film titled Banshee$ II: Back To Inisherin. There goes that dream…<\/p>\n

Dunkin’ Donuts \u2014 Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, and Jeremy Strong<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The DunKings are back! After making his debut as the fictitious musical outfit’s frontman at last year’s Super Bowl, Ben Affleck returned for the fast food chain’s latest Big Game campaign. This time, J-Lo, Matt Damon, and Tom Brady are out, and Casey Affleck and Jeremy Strong are in. As this 45-second spot of Affleck getting match ready with his boys shows, even an ad shoot warrants the full Strong Method treatment. Never change, Jeremy \u2014 never change!<\/p>\n

Michelob ULTRA \u2014 Willem Dafoe & Catherine O’Hara<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

If you thought tennis duos didn’t get more iconic than Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor in Challengers<\/a>, then Michelob ULTRA’s pairing of Catherine O’Hara and Willem Dafoe is here to say “Hold my beer” \u2014 quite literally. The Schitt’s Creek and Nosferatu<\/a> stars lead this minute-long mini-movie playing a pair of low-key tennis aces who smash a slew of actual sporting heroes (including Sabrina Ionescu, Randy Moss, and Ryan Crouser) in considerable style. Their prize? A superior light beer. Our prize? The eternal memory of Dafoe’s Goblin laugh and O’Hara’s Moira Rose worthy eyeliner.<\/p>\n

H\u00e4agen-Dazs \u2014 Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, ice-cream vendor H\u00e4agen-Dazs’s SB promo was all about family \u2014 the Fast Family, that is. This winking subversion of the Fast & Furious saga<\/a>‘s high-octane brand of petrolhead mayhem sees Dom Toretto and Letty slowing things down, switching off the nitrous, and enjoying a lovely little golden hour ice-cream, much to the chagrin of Ludacris’ Tej. “Not so fast, Not so furious” reads the ad’s strapline. *Chef’s kiss*<\/p>\n

Stella Artois \u2014 David Beckham & Matt Damon<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Stella Artois’ first Super Bowl spot in six years was well worth the wait. Here, football icon and, er, King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword<\/a> actor David Beckham is told by his folks that he is not an only son \u2014 that there is, in fact, another David. But who could this ‘Other David’ be? Why, Matt Damon of course! The star duo share some back-and-forth about the true nature of buffalo wings and their shared beverage of choice before the ad hits its peak, with Damon’s ‘Other David’ asking Beckham if he’s “Matt Damon famous”, only for the former Galactico to cuttingly quip back, “No, more like Ben Affleck famous.” Genius!<\/p>\n

ST\u014dK Cold Brew Coffee \u2014 Channing Tatum<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Wrexham AFC continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. Not only are the Red Dragons flying high in League One right now, but their sponsorship deal with ST\u014dK Cold Brew Coffee and that Hollywood connection means we get, well, this. And what this is, is Channing Tatum going full Magic Mike mode as he busts out his finest pops and locks to galvanise the Reds’ players into better celebration dances. Come for Tatum dancing, stay for big Phil Parkinson rocking up at the end and the knowledge that hundreds of millions of Americans will now be even more likely to follow Wrexham’s rags-to-riches journey back to the big leagues. It’s good to see the real beautiful game represented at the egg ball bowl!<\/p>\n

Little Caesars Pizza \u2014 Eugene & Sarah Levy<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Schitt’s Creek presence in this year’s game day spots continues as Johnny Rose and Twyla Sands \u2014 aka real-life father-daughter duo Eugene and Sarah Levy \u2014 light up Little Caesars Pizza’s playful Crazy Puffs promo. Such is the power of the pizza chain’s newest light bite that a mere taste sends father Levy’s famously bushy brows flying off on an adventure, eventually only to land, butterfly-like, on his daughter’s hand as she sups a brew.<\/p>\n

GoDaddy \u2014 Walton Goggins<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We here at Empire are simple people. We see Walton Goggins, and we are happy. And so it’ll come as no surprise that when we saw the Fallout<\/a> star had a GoDaddy ad in which he advertises Walton Goggins Goggle Glasses, we immediately sought out said advert. Suffice it to say, we were not disappointed. Now where can we actually get some of those Goggins Goggles? We are ready and waiting…<\/p>\n

Nerdwallet \u2014 Kieran Culkin<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In just a few weeks’ time, there is a very good chance that Emmy winner Kieran Culkin will also be Oscar winner Kieran Culkin, in recognition of his incredible performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s buddy dramedy A Real Pain<\/a>. And yet even an Academy Award can’t touch what will surely prove Culkin’s biggest win in 2025 \u2014 playing a genius beluga whale in Nerdwallet’s Super Bowl ad. “I’m just floatin’ here, bein’ a whale” will live on and on and on in our minds for such a long time to come.<\/p>\n

Totino’s Pizza Rolls \u2014\u00a0Sam Richardson & Tim Robinson<\/h2>\n

What happens when you bring together two of telly’s top doofuses and let ’em loose on an ad for that most quintessential of American dishes, the pizza roll? The answer is ‘Chazmo Finally Goes Home’, a 30-second bit in which Veep’s Sam Richardson and I Think You Should Leave’s Tim Robinson witness the door-jammed death of adorable extraterrestrial Chazmo, having just given the furry fella a bag of Tostino’s famous pizza rolls. As the rest of their gathered party cry out in terror, Robinson and Richardson move on surprisingly quickly, thanks in no small part to the tomato-and-cheese stuffed snacks they’ve pried from Chazmo’s cold, dead hands.<\/p>\n
