She previously <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/2013\/11\/17\/saturday-night-live-recap-lady-gaga\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:hosted and performed back in season 39;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">hosted and performed back in season 39<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I am joined tonight by former cast member John Milhiser, who acted alongside Gaga in the classic\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/snl-john-milhiser-says-lady-gaga-fought-for-his-sketch-to-air-8720111\" data-ylk=\"slk:&quot;Fourth Grade Talent Show;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">&#8220;Fourth Grade Talent Show<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b7mTdTz7HHI\" data-ylk=\"slk:sketch;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sketch<\/a>\u00a0during her first time as host. Before\u00a0<em>A Star Is Born<\/em>\u00a0ballads or\u00a0<em>Joker\u00a0<\/em>sequels, this sketch was one of the first glimpses of Gaga \u2014 a true \u201ctheater girl\u201d in Milhiser\u2019s words \u2014 playing a normal person, and being funny! He says: \u201cDuring rehearsals she was just in a flannel and black spandex pants, her hair in a ponytail. I was like, Wow! There she is! There&#8217;s the woman behind the mask, the big sunglasses, the wild costumes. He notes: \u201cI love the Lonely island \u2014 they were the grandfather of YouTube basically, sketch comedy that you could do online and reach out to the masses. So, them <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/andy-samberg-lady-gaga-perform-dick-in-a-box-snl-50-concert-eddie-vedder-bad-bunny-11680580\" data-ylk=\"slk:collaborating together [with Gaga];elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">collaborating together [with Gaga]<\/a> was pretty epic.\u201d (He also says he \u201cwas so lucky to be blessed to see Cher in person.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Back in season 39, he notes Gaga was collaborative and down to Earth, and intuitively understood comedy. \u201cShe&#8217;s funny! I mean, she&#8217;s from New York. She&#8217;s a performer through and through. She is chill. She gets it. When she came into the office, she sat in her chair with her leg up, and was very casual right away, like \u2018Let&#8217;s throw some stuff out.\u2019 She was able to riff.\u201d He also adds: \u201cShe was very open to ideas people were throwing at her. She wanted to be goofy, she wanted to play characters, she wanted to do every element. If there\u2019s anything as close to the physical comedy highs of Fourth Grade Talent Show, I will be thrilled.\u00a0Her latest album,\u00a0<em>Mayhem<\/em>, came out yesterday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Cold Open<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This week, there was an explosive meeting at the White House that ended in a yelling match between Elon Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. At the <em>SNL<\/em> Oval Office, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/james-austin-johnson-8735559\" data-ylk=\"slk:James Austin Johsnon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">James Austin Johsnon<\/a>\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/donald-trump\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Donald Trump;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Donald Trump<\/a> tries to broker a truce. (Johnson\u2019s stream-of-consciousness approach to Trump is \u201cincredible,\u201d says Milhiser.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/marcello-hernandez-8723072\" data-ylk=\"slk:Marcello Hern\u00e1ndez;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Marcello Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a> plays the long suffering Rubio, complete with music from\u00a0<em>Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/em>. Both men experience internal monologues. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/mike-myers-snl-return-elon-musk-donald-trump-volodymyr-zelenskyy-meeting-11689161\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mike Myers returns;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mike Myers returns<\/a> as very cringe Musk. \u201cPolo!\u201d he shouts whenever Trump utters the name &#8220;Marco,&#8221; with his little dance. Myers also calls out his own Dr. Evil during his internal monologue. Trump takes turns insulting the men. Not bad! (Though: Where does it\u00a0<em>end\u00a0<\/em>with Myers&#8217; cameo? I assume he&#8217;s signed for X amount of episode appearances this season, similar to his Garth, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/dana-carvey\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dana Carvey;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dana Carvey<\/a>, but presumably Musk will stay in the news for a while.)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Monologue<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gaga is here to remind us how great an actress she is, not promote her album! At 38 now, she makes a few jokes about how old that is for a pop star. And asks us to not Google her <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/music\/2019\/01\/10\/lady-gaga-apologizes-r-kelly-collaboration-vows-never-work-with-him-again\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:R. Kelly duet from 2013;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">R. Kelly duet from 2013<\/a>. She notes <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/bowen-yang\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bowen Yang;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bowen Yang<\/a> is a super fan, and he will be introducing her. We cut to a very nervous Yang. Gaga concludes by promising to not do <em>Joker 3,<\/em> referencing the terrible reception to\u00a0<em>Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux, <\/em>including a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/razzies-2025-nominations-joker-2-megalopolis-borderlands-8778082\" data-ylk=\"slk:recent Razzie Award;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">recent Razzie Award<\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>Other subjects: being from New York, smoking, and her fianc\u00e9, Michael Polansky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During her first hosting appearance, Milhiser had the opportunity to observe Gaga up close as she rehearsed, including when she performed \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/ofCFV_P6P1o\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cheap Applause;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Cheap Applause<\/a>\u201d during the monologue. \u201cShe was very in charge &#8211; a great leader to her fellow dancers. They were her peers, and she was very strict on herself, nailing it, finding the right timing. It was neat to see behind the curtain of how much she cares, nailing the comedy\u2026 she was a perfectionist.\u201d (He remembers watching R. Jeremy regrets letting her go.\u00a0Riding on the highway, a gang of fellow luggage riders, dressed like bikers, remind her about the importance of love. Jeremy is on her trail (through the audience), before catching her at the airport.\u00a0I like that this is multi-scene, and has an arc. A true sketch!\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8220;Pip&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Johnson is a teacher telling his class about the school\u2019s weight lifting competition. Anyone has a chance to win &#8211; besides Pip, a small mouse a la Stuart Little. A fellow classmate played by Gaga serenades him through song. She encourages him to train and get ready for the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One Week Later! Various students lift in front of the school &#8211; Brad (Hern\u00e1ndez) lifts 500 pounds! The CGI mouse starts with one ounce, then two ounces. That\u2019s when things take a scary turn! I won\u2019t spoil Dan Bulla\u2019s ending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">(One more season 39 flashback to when Milhiser appeared in the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9aaETeXF404\" data-ylk=\"slk:Blockbusters short film;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Blockbusters short film<\/a>\u00a0with Gaga. He says: \u201cShe actually came in for that shot later. That was a shoot through the middle of the night. So, she wasn&#8217;t there for 90% of it.\u201d)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8220;Wonderful Tonight&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yang gets a duet with Gaga \u2014 they are on a date at a restaurant where they break out into a version of Eric Clapton&#8217;s &#8220;Wonderful Tonight.&#8221; I like the whimsy, absurd tone here. It\u2019s similarly romantic and strange, like the previous one with the luggage. There\u2019s been a lot of Marcello so far tonight, so seeing Bowen opposite Gaga is refreshing.\u00a0(\u201cBowen&#8217;s killing it \u2013 fantastic,\u201d Milhiser told me earlier.)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8220;Funeral Home&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lady Gaga and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/heidi-gardner\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Heidi Gardner;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Heidi Gardner<\/a> are consoling a grieving <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/ego-nwodim\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ego Nwodim;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ego Nwodim<\/a> at a funeral home. Her dad has passed away (it\u2019s an unsolved murder actually). They ask about themes for the show, and decide on the Roaring 20s, treating it like party planners. Gaga and Gardner double down on the deranged and inappropriate 1920s idea, reappearing as flappers in bobs. And Nwodim&#8217;s boyfriend played by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/andrew-dismukes\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Andrew Dismukes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Andrew Dismukes<\/a> gets into it as well, asking if he can dress like Gatsby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cEgo is always killing it. Anytime I see Heidi or Ego in a sketch, I&#8217;m excited,\u201d says Milhiser. He also wants to \u201cshout out\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lk0xs8UT7mc\" data-ylk=\"slk:Heidi Gardner's secretary;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Heidi Gardner&#8217;s secretary<\/a>\u00a0who falls over her desk. Great physical comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nwodim did UCB L.A. as did he. As a teacher, Milhiser observed about Ego: \u201cWhen you start trying to perform characters in front of an audience. You fail a lot\u2026 but then you keep going back up there and tweaking it, and then your comedy muscle gets better and better. So, by the time you&#8217;re six or seven years in, you&#8217;re developing more successful characters, faster and faster. And I feel like Ego\u2019s ball is going fast, and she&#8217;s like, \u2018Here&#8217;s another character. Here&#8217;s another character.\u2019 She&#8217;s knows what to do right away to make a successful character.\u2019 It\u2019s also the simplicity of it. Her biggest thing:\u00a0Her characters aren&#8217;t wearing too many hats. She&#8217;s like, I&#8217;m a woman who&#8217;s cutting her steak and the table is shaking &#8211;\u00a0that&#8217;s all it is, and it heightens by the table shakes more and more and more, and stuff on the table shakes. So it&#8217;s just like that&#8217;s it, that&#8217;s all.\u201d Great observation. He also loves her Dionne Warwick.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8220;Mascara Commercial&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sometimes you want the world to know you have been crying &#8211; you know, for attention. I like it!\u00a0The music seems like it is looking to recapture what made Gaga such a pop sensation back in the aughts. Arguably, to me anyway, she\u2019s simply transcended those times &#8211; she\u2019s a superstar who can win Oscars!<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Milhiser is a fan of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/music\/lady-gaga-artpop-act-ii-dj-white-shadow-interview\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gaga\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Gaga\u2019s <\/a><em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/music\/lady-gaga-artpop-act-ii-dj-white-shadow-interview\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Art Pop;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Art Pop<\/a> <\/em>era. \u201cNot a lot of people agree with me. But I love Art Pop! It spoke to me. Love how everything tonight felt like the 10-to-1.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Lady Gaga performs &#8220;Killah&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nwodim, Thompson, and Sherman introduce this &#8217;70s-inspired funk jam with contributions from Gesaffelstein, which starts in the backstage Studio 8H hallway. This lets them use security camera footage during the chorus!
