{"id":1234175,"date":"2025-03-12T01:07:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T01:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/pt\/?p=1234175"},"modified":"2025-03-12T01:07:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T01:07:40","slug":"universal-spent-1bn-on-investments-in-2024-and-5-other-things-we-learned-on-umgs-latest-earnings-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/pt\/universal-spent-1bn-on-investments-in-2024-and-5-other-things-we-learned-on-umgs-latest-earnings-call\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal spent $1bn+ on investments in 2024 and 5 other things we learned on UMG\u2019s latest earnings call"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [3,980 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music\u00a0<\/a><span>Group published its Q4 and FY 2024 results on Thursday (March 6), posting overall revenues in FY 2024 (across recorded music, publishing, and more) of<\/span>\u00a0<strong>EUR \u20ac11.834 billion (USD $12.81bn)<\/strong>, up<span>\u00a0<strong>7.6% YoY<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s recorded music subscription revenues, meanwhile, hit <strong>EUR \u20ac4.624 billion<\/strong>\u00a0annually, up\u00a0<strong><span>9.1% YoY<\/span>, <\/strong>which\u00a0represented the equivalent of <strong>USD $5.00 billion<\/strong>, according to average exchange rates for the year\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/international-taxpayers\/yearly-average-currency-exchange-rates\">as per IRS data.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The firm\u2019s adjusted EBITDA hit\u00a0<strong>\u20ac2.661 billion ($2.88bn)<\/strong>, up\u00a0<span><strong>13.8% YoY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks on UMG\u2019s earnings call on Thursday, Chairman and CEO <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Sir Lucian Grainge [711 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/sir-lucian-grainge\/\">Sir Lucian Grainge<\/a> noted that UMG has \u201cposted healthy revenue and double-digit adjusted EBITDA growth for each and every year since 2021, when UMG became a stand-alone public company\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAt the heart of our success is, of course, the creative brilliance of our artists and songwriters. The worldwide consumption of the music of our artists and songwriters remains simply extraordinary. They\u2019re shaping culture across the entire globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grainge also explained on the company\u2019s earnings call how \u201cbreaking new artists is fundamental to [UMG\u2019s] culture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Added Grainge: \u201cWe\u2019re very proud of it. All of our teams around the world share a passion for doing just that. And in 2024, strategic investment in new talent continued to produce remarkable results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne powerful fact we\u2019re especially proud of; UMG broke the two biggest breakthrough artists in the world last year: Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist at the Grammys last month. Grainge noted on the call that \u201cUMG\u2019s artists and songwriters won a record-breaking total of more than 50 Grammys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Grainge dedicated the second half of his opening statement to the growth strategies outlined by UMG\u2019s leadership team at the company\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-universal-music-capital-markets-day-opening-address-in-full-streaming-will-continue\/\">Capital Markets Day<\/a> in September. According to Grainge, the company is \u201calready turning those strategies into realities\u2026\u201d and highlighted three particular initiatives on Thursday\u2019s earnings call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">The first is \u201cworking with [UMG\u2019s] DSP partners to drive the exciting new era of sustained growth we\u2019re calling streaming 2.0\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Second, is UMG\u2019s focus on growing its artist and label services business, which, he said, complements the company\u2019s frontline label business and \u201cprovides a broad set of resources to a wide range of artists, labels, and entrepreneurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">The third strategy highlighted by Grainge on the call was the expansion of UMG\u2019s global footprint by \u201cpartnering with local labels, developing local artists, and through M&amp;A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grainge pointed to Virgin Music Group\u2019s recent strategic partnerships with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/virgin-music-group-strikes-global-distro-deal-with-indias-hungama-digital-media\/\">Hungama Digital Media<\/a> and RainLabs, which are based in India <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universals-virgin-music-group-expands-presence-in-africa-partnering-with-ghana-based-services-company-rainlabs\/\">and Ghana<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>He also referenced Universal Music Greater China\u2019s strategic distribution <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-strikes-landmark-strategic-distribution-deal-with-chinas-modern-sky\/\">agreement<\/a> with independent label Modern Sky. UMG also recently <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-makes-another-head-turning-move-in-china-signing-local-legend-liu-huan\/\">signed<\/a> an exclusive global agreement with Liu Huan, who Grainge noted, is \u201cknown as the King of Chinese Pop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, h<\/span>ighlighting Universal\u201ds recent acquisition of a majority stake in<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-acquires-majority-stake-in-japanese-music-company-in-a-sketch12\/\"> Japan\u2019s A-Sketch<\/a>, Grainge explained that UMG is also \u201cexpanding [its] presence in established markets around the world\u201d where \u201clocal repertoire and adjacent businesses continue to present exciting growth opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Sir Lucian Grainge [711 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/sir-lucian-grainge\/\">Sir Lucian Grainge<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0plus\u00a0<strong>Boyd Muir<\/strong>, UMG\u2019s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, and\u00a0<strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Michael Nash [94 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/michael-nash\/\">Michael Nash<\/a><\/strong>, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, were grilled by analysts on the company\u2019s earnings call on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what else was said on the call\u2026<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>1. Sir Lucian Grainge says that streaming 2.0 \u2018will build on the enormous scale we\u2019ve achieved thus far in streaming\u2019s initial stage\u2019<\/h6>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [3,980 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-universal-music-capital-markets-day-opening-address-in-full-streaming-will-continue\/\">introduced<\/a> the concept of Streaming 2.0 at the company\u2019s Capital Markets Day for investors in September. It was explained that for UMG, <strong>\u2018Streaming 2.0\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0represents a new era of digital music hung on changes, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(a) Streaming subscription offerings becoming\u00a0<strong>\u2018segmented\u2019<\/strong>, with more expensive options for music\u00a0<strong>\u2018superfans\u2019;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>(b) Subscription\u00a0<strong>ARPU<\/strong>\u00a0(average revenue per user) moving upwards across music platforms, partly as a result of the aforementioned \u2018superfan\u2019-targeted offerings, and partly as a result of future\u00a0<strong>streaming price rises.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Speaking with analysts on Thursday\u2019s earnings call, Grainge explained that Streaming 2.0 will \u201cbuild on the enormous scale we\u2019ve achieved thus far in streaming\u2019s initial stage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He added: \u201cThis next stage of streaming will see it evolve into a more sustainable and growing artist-centric ecosystem that improves monetization and delivers great experiences for fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">\u201cAt the same time, enhanced consumer acquisition strategies will drive greater conversion by fans from free to paid. And then from paid on to super premium tiers enabling us to segment and [improve] customer value at higher than ever levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely encouraged by this initial implementation of streaming 2.0.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Sir Lucian Grainge<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Grainge explained, however, that the \u201cexecution\u201d of Streaming 2.0 \u201crequires a highly nuanced approach and one which adapts to the specific characteristics of each individual platform\u201d including \u201cdistinct subscriber base and obviously, the regional variations, culture, language, styles, genres, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He told analysts he\u2019s \u201cdelighted to report that [UMG\u2019s] work to usher in streaming 2.0 is well underway,\u201d noting that UMG completed its first \u201cmajor new DSP deal to incorporate the key principles of the strategy\u201d by the end of 2024. That first deal was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-and-amazon-music-ink-new-deal-covering-exclusive-content-and-with-streaming-2-0-at-its-heart\/\">with Amazon Music<\/a>. A deal with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Spotify [4,188 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a> followed in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Grainge explained that these \u201cagreements provide for new paid subscription tiers, the bundling of music and non-music content and a richer audio and visual content catalog that will benefit artists, songwriters, platforms and consumers alike\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He added: \u201cWe are extremely encouraged by this initial implementation of streaming 2.0, aligning our goals with those of our platform partners, both the Spotify and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Amazon [853 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/amazon\/\">Amazon<\/a> deals are win-win initiatives that will deliver meaningful growth and benefit the entire music ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>2. UMG is committed to being \u201cthe premier destination for the industry\u2019s best entrepreneurs and independents\u2026.\u201d<\/h6>\n<p>One of the growth strategies outlined by Sir Lucian Grainge during his opening remarks on Thursday\u2019s call was what he called \u201cthe increasing focus [UMG\u2019s] placing on expanding our artist and label services business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added Grainge: \u201cThe independent services space is highly competitive and a growing part of the industry. The reason so many independent music entrepreneurs actively seek to partner with UMG, when they have more alternatives than ever before, is that we provide what they\u2019re seeking; the most innovative creatives and the finest resources to advance their artist careers and achieve their financial goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to ensuring that UMG continues as the premier destination for the industry\u2019s best entrepreneurs and independents. After all, UMG\u2019s core is a collection of some of the greatest labels in music that always started as independent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd today, we continue to foster a culture whose highest priority is respect for artists and entrepreneurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBy investing in businesses like Downtown that can and do support today\u2019s leading music entrepreneurs, we can also help to advocate for an advanced policies and practice that will further protect and grow the entire music system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Sir Lucian Grainge\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Grainge pointed out an example of the company\u2019s \u201cefforts in this direction,\u201d highlighting the news of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/4-observations-on-downtowns-775-million-sale-to-universal-music-group-virgin-music-group\/\">Virgin Music Group\u2019s agreement<\/a> to acquire <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Downtown Music Holdings [448 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/downtown-music-holdings\/\">Downtown Music Holdings<\/a> for $775 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect the deal to close later this year,\u201d said Grainge, \u201cat which point Virgin Music Group and Downtown will offer a broadened and enhanced suite of services to clients, including digital and physical distribution, release marketing, business intelligence, neighboring rights, synchronization, royalties and royalties management\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Added Grainge: \u201cBy investing in businesses like Downtown that can and do support today\u2019s leading music entrepreneurs, we can also help to advocate for advanced policies and practice that will further protect and grow the entire music system.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>3. UMG spent over $1 billion on investments last year. Expect \u2018similar investment levels in the next few years\u2019.<\/h6>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Boyd Muir, UMG\u2019s CFO &amp; COO, revealed on the call that Universal spent just over <strong>EUR \u20ac1 billion<\/strong> (USD $1.08bn) on investments in 2024, across both catalog and other acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He provided what he called \u201ca bit more color\u201d on UMG\u2019s investments last year, noting that in 2024, the music company spent <strong>EUR \u20ac266 million<\/strong> (<strong>$287.8m<\/strong>) on catalog acquisitions specifically, up from <strong>EUR \u20ac178 million ($192.6m)<\/strong> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Muir also revealed on the call UMG spent <strong>EUR \u20ac186 million ($201.29m)<\/strong> on royalty advance payments in 2024, compared to<strong> EUR \u20ac100 million ($108.22m)<\/strong>\u00a0in 2023 (see below).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Muir added that UMG\u2019s \u201ccatalog spending in 2024 included <strong>EUR \u20ac73 million<\/strong> from a previously disclosed 2023 deal that was in escrow until early 2024 as well as the acquisition of the remaining stake in RS Group, among other items\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Universal\u00a0acquired a\u00a0<strong>70%<\/strong>\u00a0stake in the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-to-acquire-catalog-of-thailands-rs-group-inks-partnership-to-expand-presence-in-the-market\/\">recorded music catalog of Thailand\u2019s RS Group<\/a>\u00a0for around\u00a0<strong>USD $45 million<\/strong>\u00a0(plus a potential\u00a0<strong>~$5m<\/strong> in bonus payments) in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>As <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-thailand-acquisition-70-million\/\">revealed<\/a> by MBW in September, <strong>UMG<\/strong> acquired the remaining <strong>30%<\/strong> of RS Group\u2019s catalog for approximately <strong>USD $18 million<\/strong>, with a potential additional bonus fee of approximately <strong>USD<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>$2 million<\/strong>. The total sum spent by UMG to take full ownership of the RS recordings portfolio was approximately <strong>USD\u00a0<\/strong><strong>$65-$70 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Muir noted on Thursday\u2019s call that the remainder of UMG\u2019s 2024 investment spending \u201cfocused largely on deals, which push forward UMG\u2019s strategic initiatives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Deals called out by Muir included UMG\u2019s majority acquisition of Nigeria-based record label <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-buys-majority-stake-in-afrobeats-label-mavin\/\">Mavin<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-acquiring-a-stake-in-complex-as-part-of-a-takeover-focused-on-superfans-and-e-commerce\/\">undisclosed minority stake<\/a> in Complex Networks,<strong>\u00a0$240\u00a0<\/strong><span><strong>million\u00a0<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/3-observations-on-universal-music-groups-240m-bet-on-chord-music\/\">investment<\/a><\/span> in M&amp;A vehicle Chord, and the acquisition of the<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-completes-acquisition-of-pias\/\"> remaining stake in [PIAS]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a question from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Goldman Sachs [257 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/goldman-sachs\/\">Goldman Sachs<\/a>\u2018 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Lisa Yang [16 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/lisa-yang\/\">Lisa Yang<\/a> about the company\u2019s investment strategy, and how much it plans to spend in the coming years, Muir confirmed: \u201cYou should expect similar investment levels in the next few years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Muir also explained that UMG is investing in \u201cgeographies\u201d which are \u201cevolving\u201d and where UMG sees \u201cthe consumption pattern shifting towards paid subscription\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Added Muir: \u201cWe\u2019re looking at our relative share in those geographies. We want to ensure that we are positioned in those markets at a similar level to how we are positioned in the more evolved market. M&amp;A is [how] we will pursue it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that UMG is also pursuing \u201cM&amp;A in relation to other strategic initiatives\u201d and highlighted UMG\u2019s investment in Complex Networks as \u201ctaking [UMG] into the zone where music meets culture, meets commerce and e-commerce and having the relationship with the superfan\u201d.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>4. Sir Lucian Grainge says that where DPS go geographically, UMG goes \u201cwith them hand-in-hand, investing in local talent\u201d.<\/h6>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Sir Lucian Grainge, weighed in on the answer to the question about UMG\u2019s investments and \u201cstrategic initiatives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He explained that the expansion of licensed streaming globally and the availability of market-level data have impacted the decision-making behind UMG\u2019s M&amp;A and artist development strategies in various markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">\u201cThere\u2019s a significant story in terms of what happened in the past over the last three, four, five decades insofar as a lot of the markets and regions where we\u2019re investing are where there was no investment [previously] because there was massive piracy and there was no protection for copyright and IP\u201d, said Grainge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">He added: \u201cSo where markets evolve through music in the cloud and digital distribution and global platforms like Amazon, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Apple [1,302 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>, Spotify, etc; where they go, we go with them hand-in-hand, investing in local talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Commenting further on the company\u2019s geographic M&amp;A strategy, Grainge continued: \u201cThere are some markets where there are enormous libraries and catalogs of labels that were created decades ago.\u00a0 We can actually put into our M&amp;A strategy with them to continue to invest in their business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">\u201cAnd now with all the data, we\u2019re able to actually identify exactly what the audience and what the consumer actually wants in these markets, whereas before, we were running an operating blindfold in terms of the direction in which we were going.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6 class=\"my-10 mx-0\">5. And in terms of geographic mix, 45% of [the] current subscriber base is in the developed markets and 55% is now sitting in the high-growth markets, including China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Nash added that the company sees \u201csome basis for even more optimism in terms of the expansion of the total addressable market\u201d for global subscriptions in \u201cterms of progress on superfan and on the super-premium tier\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Nash also confirmed that UMG is \u201cin conversations with all of our partners about super-premium tiers,\u201d adding that it is \u201cgoing to be an important development from segmentation of the market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-10 mx-0\">Nash added that UMG \u201cexpect[s] the platforms are going to compete on product with differentiated super-premium tier offers\u201d.
