\nshowcased their shared love of country music while

Previous to that they

\nTonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/i>\u2014the song was
\nthe #2 most-added track at AAA radio and currently holds the
\n#11 spot on the chart. Earlier this month they also
\npreviewed ‘<\/strong><\/i>Bottom
\nof a Bottle’<\/strong><\/i> <\/strong>during their
\nappearance on The

Julien Baker &
\nTORRES<\/strong> have now released a new single,
\n‘<\/strong><\/i>Dirt,<\/strong><\/i>‘<\/strong><\/i>
\noffering another glimpse into their forthcoming
\ncollaborative album, Send a Prayer My Way<\/strong>,
\nout April 18 via Matador Records.<\/p>\n

Send A
\nPrayer My Way<\/strong> has been in the works since Baker and
\nTORRES played their first show together in 2016 and at the
\nend one singer turned to the other and said, \u201cYou know,
\nwe should make a country album.\u201d<\/i> This is the origin
\nstory, the stuff of legend in the world of country music,
\nand the beginning of a collaboration between two artists
\nalready admired for their spare, elegant lyrics as well as
\nthe courage to share their struggles with those who love
\ntheir music. It\u2019s also the beginning of creating a work
\nthat, like the most enduring country albums, sustains and
\ninspires, reminding both singer and listener that not one of
\nus is ever totally alone in this world, that music is a
\nsteady companion.<\/p>\n

Baker &
\nTORRES<\/strong> first teased Send a Prayer My Way
\n<\/strong>with the single ‘Sugar in the Tank,’<\/i> which
\ngarnered acclaim from fans and critics worldwide. The duo
\ncapped off 2024 with a performance of the track on The
\nTonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/i>. The song became
\nthe #2 most-added track at AAA radio and currently sits at
\n#30 on the chart. Reflecting Julien Baker and
\nTORRES<\/strong>\u2019 deep love of country music, ‘Sugar in
\nthe Tank’ <\/i>joyfully reclaims the genre\u2019s traditions and
\niconography, which until recently felt exclusionary. Watch

Listen: For some of us,
\nmaybe even most of us, it\u2019s been a rough year. As I write
\nthese words, it\u2019s mid-November in Chicago, the warmest
\nautumn on record, and the bad news keeps coming. Family and
\nanimals and homes washed away in the rural south. A wildfire
\nseason that never ends. Too much water in some places, not
\nenough in others. Back in my home state of Texas, pregnant
\npeople, some barely out of childhood, are dying for lack of
\nmedical care. And Lord have mercy if you, or someone you
\nlove, is an undocumented immigrant, or if you\u2019re trans,
\nqueer, poor, Black, and the list goes on (and on and on).
\nSometimes it feels like the whole damned world has made up
\nits mind to destroy itself once and for all. So I feel it in
\nmy bones when Julien Baker sings, That it can\u2019t get
\nmuch worse depends on who you\u2019re askin<\/i>. Maybe you feel
\nit, too, and maybe you could use the good company of this
\nmuch-anticipated country album by critically acclaimed
\nartists Julien Baker & TORRES (aka Mackenzie
\nScott).<\/p>\n

Send A Prayer My Way <\/i>has been in the
\nworks for years. Imagine two young musicians playing their
\nfirst show together at Lincoln Hall, a much-loved venue here
\nin Chicago. It\u2019s January 15, 2016, and bone chillingly
\ncold outside, especially for a couple of southerners. When
\nthe show is over and they\u2019re shooting the shit, one singer
\nsays to the other, \u201cWe should make a country album.\u201d
\nThis is the origin story, the stuff of legend in the world
\nof country music, and the beginning of a collaboration
\nbetween two artists already<\/i> admired for their spare,
\nelegant lyrics as well as the courage to share their
\nstruggles with those who love their music. It\u2019s also the
\nbeginning of creating a work that, like the most enduring
\ncountry albums, sustains and inspires, reminding both singer
\nand listener that not one of us is ever totally alone in
\nthis world, that music is a steady companion. Why are you
\nweeping? Whom are you seeking,\u201d <\/i>they sing in \u201cNo
\nDesert Flower.\u201d I can take more than a little rain\/If
\nthe going\u2019s tough I will not cower\/And all the passing
\nyears won\u2019t wash me away.<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll lay my cards on
\nthe table from the get-go: Send A Prayer My Way <\/i>is a
\ndamn fine country album, written and sung in the best of the
\noutlaw tradition\u2014defiant, subversive, working class, and
\ndetermined to wrestle not only with addiction, regret and
\nbad decisions, but also with oppressive systems of power.
\n(In the best outlaw country, The Law is no friend of yours,
\nand neither is The Man; in TORRES and Baker\u2019s music,
\nneither are religious blowhards or mothers who can\u2019t
\nstomach their daughter\u2019s sexuality.) These are songs about
\nwrapping up a long shift and driving home bone tired, just
\nhoping for a little weed and a quiet place to put your feet
\nup; or falling off the wagon (again) and wondering if this
\ntime it will finally drag you under the wheels; or thinking
\nthat bad decisions are the only decisions you know how to
\nmake. If you ask how I\u2019ve been doing I won\u2019t lie\/More
\nthan half the time I\u2019m only skatin by\/Waiting for the ice
\nto melt beneath me<\/i>, Baker sings in the opening song
\n\u201cDirt,\u201d and a few lines later, this beauty: Spend
\nyour whole life getting clean\/Just to wind up in the
\ndirt<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Mercifully, this is only the beginning of
\nthe stories TORRES and Baker are determined to tell. Because
\nthese are also songs about radical empathy and second
\nchances, and third chances, and while there\u2019s plenty of
\nstruggle and regret in here, there\u2019s also humor and
\ndefiance. In my book there\u2019s no such thing as guilty
\npleasure\/As long as your pleasure\u2019s not unkind<\/i>, TORRES
\nsings in \u201cThe Only Marble I\u2019ve Got Left.\u201d On
\n\u201cTuesday,\u201d she turns her gaze backward, remembering a
\nlove affair long in the rearview mirror, and the harm done
\nwhen passion meets shame. And if I could only go back in
\ntime\/I\u2019d rewrite our whole story\u2026And now I know that
\nyour shame was not mine\/And I am perfect in my Lord\u2019s
\neyes. <\/i>There is clarity in time\u2019s passage, at least
\nsometimes, and whatever grace some of us can muster often
\ncomes from taking the irreverent, and much funnier, low
\nroad. And in this way, Send a Prayer My Way <\/i>reminds
\nme of Lucinda Williams\u2019s Happy Woman Blues <\/i>(1980),
\nor Loretta Lynn singing about The Pill in 1975. And just
\nlike those badass women, Baker and TORRES aren\u2019t asking
\nfor anybody\u2019s tolerance, or forgiveness, and they sure as
\nshit aren\u2019t asking for permission.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m here
\nfor every word of it. Because some of us sinners (and I mean
\nthat as a compliment of the highest order)\u2014the criminals
\nand cheaters among us, the addicts and lonely-hearted, those
\nof us who, in the words of that brilliant and mad old
\noutlaw, Townes Van Zandt, wear your skin like iron, your
\nbreath as hard as kerosene<\/i>\u2014were nursing our own
\nprivate heartaches long before the world started its most
\nrecent long skid. Some of us have learned the hard way that
\nleaning on poetry, stories, and songs ain\u2019t a bad way to
\nsave your own life.<\/p>\n

So listen: Whatever your
\nstory\u2014if you\u2019ve been staying up late and sleeping in,
\ndodging calls from old friends and wondering how many times
\nyou can break your own heart through every fault of your
\nown; if you\u2019ve been missing work, or skipping school, or
\nblowing past deadlines like they\u2019re four-way stop signs on
\nthe highway to hell; and most especially, if you\u2019re
\nfeeling afraid for your life, or the lives of those you hold
\nmost dear\u2014I hope you will find some comfort in these
\ntwelve songs. I hope you will put a little sugar in the
\ntank<\/i> and let these two singers love you all the way
\nto hell and back. <\/i>Because here\u2019s the thing about going
\nto hell and back: You came back.<\/p>\n

\nBaker<\/h3>\n

A native of Memphis who began playing music in
\nchurch as a child, Julien Baker<\/strong> shot to
\nworldwide attention in 2015 with her show-stopping debut,
\nSprained Ankle<\/strong><\/i>. Recorded in only a
\nfew days, it was a bleak yet hopeful meditation on identity,
\naddiction, faith, resilience and redemption. An intense and
\nimmersive performer, her live shows were described by

TORRES<\/strong> is the pseudonym of
\nMackenzie Scott<\/strong>. She was born January 23,
\n1991, and lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her wife Jenna,
\nstepson Silas, and puppy Sylvia. She has been releasing
\nalbums and performing as TORRES <\/strong>since
\n2013.<\/p>\n

What an enormous room<\/strong> <\/i>is
\nTORRES\u2019<\/strong> sixth studio album (her third
\nwith Merge). It was recorded in September and October 2022
\nat Stadium Heights Sound in Durham, North Carolina. It was
\nengineered by Ryan Pickett<\/strong>, produced by
\nMackenzie Scott<\/strong> and Sarah
\nJaffe<\/strong>, mixed by TJ Allen<\/strong> in
\nBristol, UK, and mastered by Heba Kadry<\/strong> in
\nNYC. The album contains 10 songs. Mackenzie<\/strong>
\nwrote all of them. Sarah<\/strong> played bass
\nguitar, synths, drums, organ, and piano.
\nMackenzie<\/strong> sang vocals, played guitar, bass,
\nsynths, organ, piano, and programmed drums. Additional synth
\nbass, tambourine, and shakers were played by TJ
\nAllen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
