Whatever the reason, it suits him.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Sitting in front of me on Zoom less than two weeks before his show\u2019s premiere, the actor, 23, radiates a humble warmth that suggests fame hasn\u2019t upended his life yet \u2014 even after I tell him about the flurry of \u201cForever\u201d fan edits and gifs already circulating on social media (which he stays off of), created by viewers eager to see young Black love back on their screens. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Though Cooper is on the verge of a career breakthrough, the rising star isn\u2019t letting his debut as a leading man go to his head. But that\u2019s not Justin,\u201d he says. \u201cJustin has ADHD. He struggles with a speech impediment. He has to have an executive functioning tutor \u2026 I\u2019ve never seen anybody like him.\u201d<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>He adds: \u201cHe\u2019s a strange guy. And that\u2019s a lot of the lines throughout the show. People are like, \u2018You\u2019re a strange cat, or you\u2019re otherworldly. You\u2019re a weird dude.\u2019 Because he <\/span><span>is<\/span><span> weird, man, he\u2019s weird in the best way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Cooper credits Brock Akil for turning Justin into a multidimensional character who\u2019s \u201ca bit more submissive\u201d than his fiery, track star love interest. He says reading Blume\u2019s book (after he booked the role) also helped inform that approach: \u201cJust understanding what Mara wanted to do to use Justin and make sure that he reflects \u2018the girl,\u2019 and Keisha was \u2018the guy.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>The actor also took time to research before filming, since certain aspects of Justin\u2019s background \u2014 like attending private school or being one of the few Black students at a predominantly white institution \u2014 didn\u2019t align with his own lived experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cHe\u2019s so different than me,\u201d Cooper shares. \u201cI always say I\u2019m a little bit more like Keisha. She knows where she wants to go, and she seems to be a little bit more in control. Justin is kind of all over the place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Other aspects felt more relatable, like experiencing heartbreak \u2014 \u201cmy ex-girlfriend, we split around that time [of filming], and I was able to use some of the life lessons and the pain\u201d \u2014 and Justin\u2019s struggles with ADHD \u2014 \u201cI don\u2019t have it as extreme as he does, but when I have tunnel vision for something, I have <\/span><span>tunnel vision<\/span><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Marrying these traits was essential to Cooper\u2019s understanding of his character, particularly his emotional depth. Something intuitive told the actor that that element needed to be probed in a way that hadn\u2019t been shown on modern television. Ultimately, it became his guiding light.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cBecause it\u2019s so prominent where guys are taught to suppress, suppress, suppress. But \u201cForever\u201d marks the superproducer\u2019s first time speaking to a generation born around when her first TV hit was gaining traction. Usually, she speaks to audiences, mostly Black, of an older demographic, like Cooper\u2019s mom and grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cThey love \u2018Girlfriends,\u2019 \u2018The Game,\u2019 \u2018Being Mary Jane\u2019 \u2014 those were their shows,\u201d the actor shares with a laugh. \u201cObviously, Mara\u2019s work has spoken to so many generations already. But now, to speak to people in our generation, and to be a part of it, it\u2019s just incredible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>That\u2019s an understatement. It\u2019s not every day you work with someone as accomplished as Brock Akil, a two-time NAACP Image Award winner with over 30 years of industry experience. So I understand when Cooper says he was initially \u201cpetrified\u201d on set, while also surrounded by veteran actors like Simone, Wood Harris (who plays Justin\u2019s dad), Karen Pittman (Justin\u2019s mom), Will Catlett (Keisha\u2019s dad), Barry Shabaka Henley (her grandfather) and Regina King (who directed Episode 1 and sat in on Cooper\u2019s chemistry reads).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cShe would pull me aside and reassure me, like, \u2018You are here for a reason, and we\u2019re in this together,\u2019\u201d the actor says about Brock Akil\u2019s advice. \u201cObviously, I\u2019m new to the craft and new to shooting a television show. So that constant reassurance and her leadership really set the tone on the set.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Cooper found much support from his co-stars, too, like Niles Fitch\u2019s (who plays Justin\u2019s charming best friend, Darius) industry talks, and Simone, who imparted some TV wisdom from her \u201cGreenleaf\u201d days. He had no idea what being No. 1 on the call sheet even entailed \u2014 citing Apple TV+\u2019s recent documentary of the same name \u2014 until he sat down for his first \u201cForever\u201d table read.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cI remember looking to Karen and Wood, who were sitting right next to me, and I was like, \u2018I\u2019ve never done this before. I\u2019ve only been acting for two to three years, and I\u2019m not classically trained.\u2019 You know, the whole impostor syndrome thing,\u201d Cooper vents. \u201cThey were very supportive and kind about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cIt was frightening,\u201d he adds, \u201cbut when you start to get in the groove of it, it\u2019s like, okay, we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-sized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"&quot;Forever&quot; is far from your average teen drama, where actors are usually too mature or limited in how they portray the nuances of high school life.\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/681a9e5018000017007a2beb.jpg?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-image__source-wrapper\">&#8220;Forever&#8221; is far from your average teen drama, where actors are usually too mature or limited in how they portray the nuances of high school life.<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Those familiar with Blume\u2019s \u201cForever\u201d know how the literary classic was criticized for depicting teenage sexuality, long before society unclutched its pearls and started having more transparent, mainstream talks about sex. That\u2019s why Brock Akil\u2019s rendition feels not just timely but long overdue. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cMara is brilliant. She really is,\u201d Cooper emphasizes. \u201cShe knew exactly what society needed in this specific time, and to be able to serve in this way, it\u2019s huge for me. I don\u2019t take it lightly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cForever\u201d is certainly a departure from some teen dramas today, where the actors look too grown to portray the high school experience, or lack the space to capture the emotional intensity of a romance on the brink of adulthood. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>In many ways, the show honors Blume\u2019s boldness, with <\/span><span>plenty<\/span><span> of references to teen intimacy \u2014 viewers are sure to melt over the steamy scenes in \u201cForever.\u201d It also builds a more self-aware world open to addressing modern issues, like a school sex tape scandal and an ADHD diagnosis \u2014 things that are common in everyday life but not often given a spotlight onscreen. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cTelevision has a way of glamorizing situations, and we don\u2019t really hit the root of actual human experiences and truth,\u201d Cooper points out. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-sized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Mara Brock Akil's rendition of &quot;Forever&quot; refreshingly centers Blackness in all its facets, from highlighting the Black side of Los Angeles to praising higher learning at HBCUs.\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/681a9b621500002f008b02e0.jpg?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-image__source-wrapper\">Mara Brock Akil&#8217;s rendition of &#8220;Forever&#8221; refreshingly centers Blackness in all its facets, from highlighting the Black side of Los Angeles to praising higher learning at HBCUs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>The biggest difference between Brock Akil\u2019s \u201cForever\u201d and Blume\u2019s version is how Black it is, and not just the cast and crew behind it. From praising HBCUs like Howard University and showcasing the Black side of L.A. to vacationing at the Black haven Martha\u2019s Vineyard and having \u201cthe talk\u201d about the harsh realities of being a Black boy in America, the visual and literal language of \u201cForever\u201d is deeply rooted in cultural specificity \u2014 Brock Akil\u2019s speciality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span> <\/span><span>\u201cOne of the [things] that Mara did so well, conveying through the show, was that she really captured the Black experience,\u201d Cooper says, recalling a scene where Justin\u2019s parents instruct their Black son how to conduct himself during a traffic stop: \u201cPut your hands on the wheel. He\u2019s quick to correct me when I say how comfortable he seemed portraying a character that comes off so relatable.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cMy friend, I sent him the show, and he called me like, \u2018Bro, that\u2019s not you,\u2019\u201d the actor laughs at the memory. That aspect, he says, is also what attracted him to the role: \u201cBecause he\u2019s so different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>That\u2019s one way to describe Justin. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Nuanced<\/span><span> feels like a more fitting word to capture the complexity of his life in \u201cForever,\u201d as his eight-episode arc shows him not only navigating his first real relationship but also the weight of identity and expectation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Justin felt very familiar while watching the show. He\u2019s a shy, nerdy teen with a learning disability, just trying to find his place in the world. He struggles to meet the high expectations of his wealthy, accomplished parents, Eric and Dawn (beautifully played by Harris and Pittman), while figuring out what he really wants out of life \u2014 whether it\u2019s playing D1 basketball at a top-notch university, making cool beats for rappers or being with Keisha for the long haul.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018He has one foot in confidence and the other in insecurity,\u2019\u201d Cooper recalls the description Brock Akil wrote in the first script. \u201cSometimes he\u2019ll word vomit something that\u2019s like, \u2018What are you talking about, dude?\u2019 And it leads him into some sticky situations. But as the story progresses, you see him grow, and you start to see when he finds music and his purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>He continues, \u201cIt was a very interesting thing to see him. I act like I didn\u2019t play the character. And I know that sounds weird, but it\u2019s like that watching [the show back] because you see him change, and it\u2019s just a testament to how life is. I was even in college [at the University of Texas at Austin] while filming both movies [\u2018On the Come Up\u2019 and \u2018The Inhabitant\u2019], studying political science.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>But the acting bug had already caught hold of Cooper when he was a kid growing up in Texas, and again during his sophomore year of high school after a teammate suggested he audition for the school play, \u201cHigh School Musical.\u201d Then, one day, Cooper asked one of his fellow castmates, who had been acting since he was 9, how he got into film. The rest, as they say, was history. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s kind of how I took that leap,\u201d Cooper concludes. \u201cIt just kind of happened, but it felt right internally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>The actor had that same feeling years later, in early 2023, when he got the call to audition for \u201cForever.\u201d The opportunity felt almost like divine timing since Cooper had just spoken about Blume\u2019s work a month prior, when he was home in Dallas for Christmas. As he recalls, the acclaimed author\u2019s name came up randomly during a conversation with his mom.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cI was like, \u2018What kind of books were you into as a kid?\u2019\u201d Cooper remembers. \u201cShe was like, \u2018Judy Blume!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>I say that had to be the universe working in his favor, and he agrees, adding: \u201cWe talked about Judy Blume, not knowing that I was about to receive a script based on \u2018Forever.\u2019 It was kind of like this weird thing. I was like, Mom, we just had a conversation about this. It wasn\u2019t until he had to fly to L.A. for his first \u201cForever\u201d chemistry read \u2014 in Brock Akil\u2019s office \u2014 that nerves started to kick in.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cI thought I tanked it,\u201d he admits. \u201cI came in thinking, there\u2019s no way I\u2019m gonna get this. You know, I\u2019m not a [well-known] name. I don\u2019t have a r\u00e9sum\u00e9. I\u2019m new. There\u2019s just no way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>Little did he know the universe was already at work again, sending him another sign that everything was falling into place \u2014 his future co-star, Simone, was on the same flight to L.A.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cI was in Atlanta at the time, so we flew together on a plane, and she sat right next to me, and I sat right next to her,\u201d Cooper shares. \u201cWe didn\u2019t say a word. We had our earbuds in. It\u2019s not lost on Cooper that he plays a powerful role in that.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cHow grateful am I to be able to be a part of something that has such momentum and such great artists at the helm of it,\u201d he says. \u201cTo hear the responses from people who\u2019ve seen the show, I\u2019m like, I\u2019m glad you felt it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>For Cooper, portraying Justin \u201cwas a dream,\u201d one that challenged him to unlock new parts of his humanity. \u201cForever\u201d certainly transformed his early 20s, but it\u2019s bittersweet that the show wasn\u2019t around for his teenage years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span>\u201cBeing able to see a Black boy going through the same Black experiences living in America, that would have hit,\u201d the actor says enthusiastically. \u201cThose things that have been shown, but haven\u2019t really been shown in this way or this capacity, I think, would have been really helpful.
