She was a woman of contradictions — mocked for her appearance, burdened by debt, and yet instrumental in the formation of modern British royalty through her daughter, Queen Mary of Teck.

Born into the British royal family as the daughter of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and a granddaughter of King George III, Mary Adelaide enjoyed royal status from birth. Yet she struggled to find a suitable husband due to her looks and reputation for being picky. At the age of 32 — unusually late for a royal woman of the time — she married Prince Francis of Teck, a handsome but landless and title-poor nobleman of morganatic birth.

Despite their royal duties and social obligations, the couple constantly battled financial instability. Mary Adelaide received a generous parliamentary allowance and additional help from Queen Victoria, but her extravagant spending habits — on haute couture, jewels, and lavish trips — soon led the family into overwhelming debt.

In 1883, pressured by creditors, the Teck family went into voluntary exile, living in Florence and later in Germany and Austria under the modest titles of Count and Countess of Hohenstein. Still, Mary Adelaide never accepted a life of anonymity and insisted on maintaining royal standards, even in exile. She eventually returned to England in 1885, unrepentant and still financially irresponsible.

However, her story took a dramatic turn when her daughter, May (later Queen Mary), was engaged to Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria’s eldest grandson and heir to the throne. Though the prince died of pneumonia weeks before the wedding in 1892, Queen Victoria arranged for May to marry Albert’s younger brother, Prince George — the future George V.

This marriage elevated the Teck family to new heights, restoring their status and solidifying their position within the core of British royalty. For Mary Adelaide, this was the ultimate triumph: her daughter would become Queen of England.

Despite her excesses, Mary Adelaide was not without compassion. She was actively involved in charity work, particularly with children in poverty, often sewing clothes herself to distribute among the needy — a touching contrast to her otherwise extravagant lifestyle.

Mary Adelaide died in 1897 following a surgery, just as her daughter was becoming a central figure in the monarchy. Her life, though controversial and at times ridiculed, left an indelible mark on British royal history.

Video Source

Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (1833–1897), nicknamed “Fat Mary” by a cruel and judgmental Victorian society, was much more than just a flamboyant royal with a taste for luxury.
