Twice! The first time was in a theatre on their 1976 Canadian tour. At that point, I only knew they were a glam band from England. I had probably seen their picture in <em>Hit Parader<\/em> or <em>Circus<\/em> or something. But those were the days when concert tickets cost less than $10, so taking a flyer on a band was no big deal. I remember I lucked into a front-row seat. I remember an old lady (who must have been a theater employee) handing out cotton balls to the kids before the show. And I remember the band flashing the \u2018<strong>Slade<\/strong> sign\u2019 \u2014 a fist with the thumb extended horizontally. I remember them saying, \u201cCarry the <strong>Slade<\/strong> sign with you throughout your life!\u201d Um, OK. The second time I saw them was in the \u201980s on an arena tour, thanks to the success of their hit single <em>Run Runaway<\/em>, from the album <em>Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply<\/em>. A chaotic encounter at the airport with <strong>Palace<\/strong> guards convinced them never to return and played a key role in their decision to end touring altogether. Initially, <strong>The Beatles<\/strong> distinguished between their fans and the officials, but the entire visit came to be remembered as a single \u201cbad\u201d experience.
