I don\u2019t recommend (or really read) many newsletters in this space, but Rollins Berg separates himself from the pack with his unique topics. Seriously, this guy writes about things no one else is, like \u201ctrash\u201d Disney films, pillow shots, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streamscoop.substack.com\/\">StreamScoop<\/a><\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streamscoop.substack.com\/\"> by Josh Matthews<\/a><span>. My team uses this newsletter every week to double check our work and that\u2019s about the best compliment I can give a fellow newsletter!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seanfennessey.substack.com\/\">Projections<\/a><\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seanfennessey.substack.com\/\"> by Sean Fennessy<\/a><span>. Professional jealousy aside (he bumped me from third to fourth on the Substack bestsellers chart!), Fennessey is obviously a must-read newsletter if you care about cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I recommend a lot of newsletters, but I actually have a pretty high bar for a shout out. There are so many great newsletters out there right now\u2014I just discovered two great new Substacks in the last week\u2014so it\u2019s not easy to make the blogroll. My criteria is deceptively simple: write great stuff, publish regularly, and be kind (which is easier said than done). Of those, publishing regularly is the main reason most newsletters don\u2019t make the cut.<\/p>\n<p><span>Okay, on to this week\u2019s issue. I\u2019m looking at three new TV shows that popped on the charts: Paramount+\u2019s <\/span><em>Dutton Ranch, <\/em><span>Netflix\u2019s <\/span><em>Nemesis<\/em><span> and Prime Video\u2019s <\/span><em>Off Campus<\/em><span>. They go up against a big week for streaming \u201cspecials\u201d: Netflix\u2019s The Roast of Kevin Hart, Netflix\u2019s Ronda Rousey-Gina Carano fight, Peacock\/YouTube\u2019s The Eurovision Song Contest and Prime Video\u2019s Academy of Country Music Awards. All that, plus Prime Video quietly ends one of their buzziest series, <\/span><em>The Boys<\/em><span> continues to roll, a slew of Netflix shows fall off the charts, Sony tries to steal Netflix\u2019s kids animated thunder, Apple TV+ solidifies one of their \u201chits for them, two UK-imports that flopped in the US, a new survey on who\u2019s cool (and which celebrities most Americans haven\u2019t heard of), all the flops, bombs and misses, and a whole lot more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s dive right in!<\/p>\n<p><em><span>(Reminder: The streaming ratings report focuses on the U.S. market and compiles data from Nielsen\u2019s weekly <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/us\/en\/top-ten\/\">top ten viewership ranks<\/a><span>, Luminate\u2019s Top Ten Data, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/showlabs.tv\/\">Showlabs<\/a><span>, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whipmedia.com\/resources\/data-reports-global-anticipation\/\">TV Time<\/a><span> trend data, Samba TV household viewership, company <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainmentstrategyguy.com\/2018\/12\/04\/introducing-datecdotes-when-streaming-companies-use-data-to-win-the-pr-wars\/\">datecdotes<\/a><span>, Netflix hours viewed data, Google Trends, and IMDb to determine the most popular content. While most data points are current, Nielsen\u2019s data covers the weeks of March 11th to March 17th, 2026.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.substack.com\/p\/the-entstrategyguys-entertainment\">You can find a link to my terminology here<\/a><span>.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h5>Best of all, I\u2019m unlocking this edition of the Streaming Ratings Report for everyone! And please subscribe!<\/h5>\n<p><span>Is this the week that TV finally gets its spring mojo back? We\u2019ve had a few down weeks on the Nielsen top ten charts. One way to track this is by looking at the top show by total hours viewed, and we haven\u2019t seen a show eclipse 25 million hours since <\/span><em>Virgin River<\/em><span> the week of 9-March. The only show to break 20 million hours since was <\/span><em>The Pitt\u2019<\/em><span>s finale episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All to say, we haven\u2019t had a new show smash the viewership charts in a bit.<\/p>\n<p>But this week, the streamers took some big swings to try to reverse that slide this week. Here\u2019s the Nielsen top ten list:<\/p>\n<div class=\"captioned-image-container\">\n<figure><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!q0mw!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9e884901-3735-413a-babf-c815c06c2a74_577x320.png\" data-component-name=\"Image2ToDOM\" class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img can-restack\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"image2-inset\"><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>No TV shows got over 20 million hours again\u2014one special did, but I\u2019ll discuss it in the film section\u2014so this is another disappointing start. But there are some glimmers of hope\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the obvious: Taylor Sheridan.<\/p>\n<p><span>The dude makes hits and looks to have another on his hands. His latest is <\/span><em>Dutton Ranch<\/em><span>, a spinoff of <\/span><em>Yellowstone<\/em><span>, but not branded that way in the title for legal reasons. It\u2019s also a weekly release\u2014smart!\u2014so its opening week of 12.1 million hours has to be taken in that context. It opened to 9.2 million hours on Luminate and lasts at least three weeks on those charts, peaking at 18.3 million hours. (See chart in next section.) Paramount+ also put out a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainmentstrategyguy.com\/2018\/12\/04\/introducing-datecdotes-when-streaming-companies-use-data-to-win-the-pr-wars\/\">datecdote<\/a><span> calling it their biggest launch to date, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/dutton-ranch-premiere-ratings-record-paramount-1236921113\/\">with 12.9 million \u201cstreaming views\u201d in the first seven days<\/a><span>, passing<\/span><em> The Madison, <\/em><span>which had 8.0 million views in its first ten days. (Reminder: <\/span><em>The Madison <\/em><span>only had six episodes at launch, which is partially why it dropped off so quickly. Also, I hate when companies use different time periods on their datecdotes!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s not all good news, though. We haven\u2019t seen <\/span><em>Dutton Ranch<\/em><span> make the Samba TV charts, and popular Paramount+ shows have made those rankings. It also has an elite IMDb score (an 8.4) but on only 9.3K reviews, which isn\u2019t a great number of reviews. While Sheridan shows skew older\u2014and hence has fewer IMDb reviews\u2014that\u2019s still low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have to wait and see how long this one lasts on the charts before we can judge, but I predict good things.<\/p>\n<p><span>The data is more mixed for Netflix\u2019s <\/span><em>Nemesis<\/em><span>, a binge-released crime show from the creator of Starz\u2019s <\/span><em>Power<\/em><span>. That\u2019s a little ahead of <\/span><em>Man on Fire<\/em><span>, though that show had seven episodes to <\/span><em>Nemesis<\/em><span>\u2019 eight. Lastly, its IMDb rating is poor, only a 6.0 on 4.3K IMDb reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So like I said, if this does well next week, it may be Netflix\u2019s best Q2 show so far, but it doesn\u2019t look great or elite. (Like say <\/span><em>Untamed<\/em><span> from last year.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The last show comes from Prime Video, and it\u2019s an original premise:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A hockey show with lots of sex!!!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>I speak of <\/span><em>Off Campus<\/em><span>, a college drama about hockey that has lots of sex scenes. Next, it has terrific IMDb scores, an 8.0 on 33K reviews. Lastly, Amazon put out a vague datecdote saying it \u201creached\u201d <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/off-campus-ratings-prime-video-1236606024\/\">36 million viewers in 12 days<\/a><span>, only behind their two biggest debuts of all time, <\/span><em>Fallout<\/em><span> and <\/span><em>Rings of Power<\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I do have a theory that sometimes certain films or shows with graphic sex scenes get replayed a lot for\u2026those scenes. Or passed around. I think this may have happened with <\/span><em>Euphoria<\/em><span>, <\/span><em>Heated Rivalry<\/em><span>, and now <\/span><em>Off Campus<\/em><span>. This can help metrics like \u201creach\u201d, while keeping total hours viewed a bit lower. I\u2019m not saying that happened here, but it may have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prime Video binge-released it, so it will likely burn bright than fade out. For example, on Samba TV, it only lasted one week on the charts, not a sign of a huge smash.<\/p>\n<p><span>To close, I have to make a comparison, but I really don\u2019t want to. Sigh. There was another sexy hockey show that, whenever I mention it, folks get upset, saying it doesn\u2019t matter what the viewership numbers say, it was really, really, really popular\/its fanbase is super engaged. Anyways, yeah, <\/span><em>Off Campus<\/em><span> has as much viewership in its first week (8.6 million hours) as <\/span><em>Heated Rivalry<\/em><span> had in its first five weeks (8.7 million hours). Still, we\u2019ll see how long it lasts on the charts.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><span>Netflix\u2019s dating show <\/span><em>Perfect Match<\/em><span> showed up for its fourth season on Netflix this week and had a mixed debut. It missed the Nielsen and Samba TV charts entirely, but did land on Luminate. It amassed weeks of 8.7 and 7.1 million hours, then falls off. Overall, this is a disappointing outing, and even Netflix may be running out of patience with it. The first season started with a twelve-episode order, which dropped to ten for the next two seasons, and now it\u2019s down to eight. HBO also provided a datecdote that it was their \u201c<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/rooster-season-1-finale-ratings-hbo-1236904724\/\">most watched debut comedy<\/a><span>\u201d in fifteen years, which is a pretty parsed category, with 6.5 million average viewers per episode and 2.2 million viewers in the first three days. It never made the Nielsen charts, so I\u2019d say it\u2019s a hit for HBO for comedies, but probably not a smash. This is yet more evidence that foreign TV shows (even from English-speaking countries like the UK) <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.substack.com\/i\/169585922\/quick-hits-and-corrections\">can struggle in the US<\/a><span>. I\u2019ve been told that <\/span><em>Rivals<\/em><span> is popular in the UK (the rare streaming show to make BARB, their rating system) but this report focuses on the US. As for <\/span><em>Good Omens<\/em><span>, that feels like a pricey miss. <\/span><em>Good Omens<\/em><span> does have elite IMDb scores, even for a genre show.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span>As for other DNBs or \u201cDogs Not Barking\u201d of the week (my term for any show or film that doesn\u2019t make any of the ratings charts that I track, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainmentstrategyguy.com\/2022\/07\/14\/dogs-not-barking-or-dnbs-explained\/\">find an explainer here<\/a><span>), the most notable is Netflix\u2019s <\/span><em>Devil May Cry<\/em><span>. Samba TV said that this show <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/samba_tv\/status\/2056851681799721092\">lost half its audience this season<\/a><span>, though they\u2019ve been citing similar drops for a lot of shows. (I wonder if their methodology changed.) Regardless, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.substack.com\/i\/200800474\/unpopular-shows-that-got-renewed\">this show is ending after its next season<\/a><span>. Adult animation and anime-influenced media just aren\u2019t as popular as much of the hype makes it out to be. Next up, HBO Max\u2019s <\/span><em>On The Roam<\/em><span>, starring Jason Momoa, came out for season two and missed the charts; you just don\u2019t see as many celebrity travel docu-series as you used to, probably <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.substack.com\/i\/136313760\/celebrity-travel-docs-arent-working\">because they didn\u2019t work<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span>Four different shows switched streamers: Wonder Channel\u2019s <\/span><em>It\u2019s Not Like That<\/em><span> headed to Prime Video after a few months. BET+\u2019s <\/span><em>Zatima<\/em><span> premiered on Paramount+, as has been happening with a lot of BET+ shows these days. <\/span><em>Everyone is Doing Great<\/em><span> left Hulu for Netflix, but this one looks like an independent production. Netflix grabbed the rights to <\/span><em>Pop Culture Jeopardy!<\/em><span> It didn\u2019t chart, but I do like that it came out daily. None of these shows made the charts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span>As for foreign-language shows this week, <\/span><em>Between Father and Son<\/em><span> (from Mexico) didn\u2019t chart, but the more notable title is <\/span><em>Berlin and the Lady With an Ermine<\/em><span> (from Spain), since past <\/span><em>Money Heist<\/em><span> spinoffs have charted.<\/span><strong> <\/strong><span>I will note that <\/span><em>The WONDERfools<\/em><span> (from South Korea) missed the charts this week, but it is projected to make the charts next week, the rare foreign-language show to actually do that, though it\u2019s still a flop.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span>As for last week\u2019s misses, I can confirm that Netflix\u2019s <\/span><em>Legends<\/em><span>, Apple TV\u2019s <\/span><em>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em><span> and Paramount+\u2019s <\/span><em>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race All Stars<\/em><span> all missed the charts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cSpecials\u201d are a tricky category for streaming ratings. Many specials\u2014especially sports\u2014don\u2019t fall under Nielsen\u2019s regular purview, so we either have to hope folks announce or leak the data for us. Otherwise, we\u2019re left wondering how they did.<\/p>\n<p>This week, we had three specials fall into this zone\u2014no data\u2014and one which fortunately made the ratings charts.<\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s start with what we do know: the <\/span><em>Roast of Kevin Hart<\/em><span> did very well for Netflix. It had a lot of buzz and translated that buzz into viewership. If Netflix kept costs mostly in check for the roast\u2014and I have no idea what they paid for his services\u2014this was a good performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Netflix didn\u2019t let its latest sporting special hit the Nielsen ratings charts, they did release some datecdotes on the Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano MMA fight on Netflix. Overall, the fight was a bit of a bust, lasting under a minute, so that will hurt its ratings. To say it politely. Good data analysis stems from comparing things <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.substack.com\/p\/apples-to-applesexplained\">apples-to-apples<\/a><span>, and Netflix makes that deliberately hard to do, probably on purpose<\/span><strong>. <\/strong><span>In this case, while I think the fight was popular in the U.S., there seems to be some decline in viewership globally, implying Netflix may be running out of top-end fight specials to stream. Using different metrics makes that harder to parse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now, we don\u2019t know much about how the other two specials performed. Prime Video hasn\u2019t released data on the <\/span><em>Academy of Country Music<\/em><span> for years now, though they do keep renewing the awards show. I\u2019ve always doubted that it drives that much tune-in, and I\u2019d bet that the show is garnering a lot fewer viewers than when it was on broadcast. (Fun fact: not that awards shows tend to get tons of views, but this one has\u202611 on IMDb as of this moment.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, the Eurovision Song Contest is insanely popular in Europe, but we have little visibility here in the States. It\u2019s never charted for Peacock, and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eshap.substack.com\/p\/the-original-talent-competition\">now it streams on YouTube as well<\/a><span>. You can check out the track list, which is topped by one song with 20 million views, but most videos were much smaller than that. Again, those are global numbers, so it\u2019s tough to say what they translate to in terms of U.S. viewership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Looking for lessons across these sporting events, it remains the same: specials\u2014especially non-Netflix specials\u2014struggle to resonate with viewers, mostly due to user experience issues.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><span>Sony\u2019s <\/span><em>GOAT<\/em><span> came to Netflix after just breaking the $100 million mark at the domestic box office earlier this year. It opened to 17.9 million hours, so the obvious comparison is to <\/span><em>Swapped<\/em><span>, a film that\u2019s now Netflix\u2019s second or third best kids film this decade (and likely before, though I don\u2019t have data for it). In this case, <\/span><em>GOAT<\/em><span>, a popular-but-not-blockbuster kids animated title, bested <\/span><em>Swapped<\/em><span> by 9.5 million hours. It also made Samba TV for two weeks, at fourth and third place. (It isn\u2019t eligible for the Luminate charts.) Yeah, I\u2019d say this is more evidence that even non-blockbuster theatrical runs can succeed on streaming, but it\u2019s just one data point. This is the second standalone special with Jon Bernthal from a Disney streamer in two weeks, along with Hulu\u2019s standalone <\/span><em>The Bear<\/em><span> episode, <\/span><em>Gary<\/em><span>, from last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span>Other misses include Netflix\u2019s Marty, Life Is Short, which missed Nielsen, <\/span><em>The Black Phone 2<\/em><span>, which left Peacock for Netflix, but didn\u2019t chart, and Hulu\u2019s latest standup special, <\/span><em>Lisa Ann Walter: It Was An Accident. <\/em><span>Netflix also started a spinoff of<\/span><em> Untold <\/em><span>series of films set in the UK, but it hasn\u2019t charted yet. On Luminate, <\/span><em>Kartavya<\/em><span> made the charts at a lowly 1.3 million hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>At the beginning of May, Instagram purged millions of followers from hundreds of thousands of accounts. And the impact was huge for some creators: <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/creators.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/story\/instagram-bot-purge-2026-millions-of-followers-vanish-as-celebs-and-creators-are-hit-hard-230919317.html\">Kylie Jenner lost 14 million followers<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/annabel-burba\/brands-and-celebs-lost-millions-of-followers-thanks-to-this-instagram-update-including-instagram-itself\/91342426\">According to Inc<\/a><span>, no creator lost more than 2.5% of their followers, but still, it shows how, when it comes to social media metrics, they\u2019re often far gaudier than reality. Imagine if Instagram and other sites deactivated inactive accounts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This has real ramifications for data analysis. Many reporters cite social media followers much, much too credulously. As this anecdote shows, they can be changed relatively easily.
