JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Thalia Mara Hall is expected to reopen next week, according to Jackson leaders. The facility was expected to reopen on Saturday, January 18.
According to the City of Jackson, recent air quality tests came back positive in some areas and negative in others. They said one area of concern is the foyer/lobby. The recommendation was made to fumigate those areas, which required nobody to be in the building.
The fumigation began at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14 and is expected to be completed Wednesday afternoon. City officials said additional air quality tests will be done afterwards.
If the results are favorable, officials said work can resume Wednesday afternoon. Crews plan to work through the weekend and MLK holiday.
Jackson leaders said it was also discovered that a major pipe needed to be replaced, which is estimated to cost about $19,000. Officials said they’re gathering proposals for the replacement and plan to obtain a Purchase Order immediately to prevent any further delays.
“While we were hopeful to reopen Thalia this Friday, that was always the most optimistic projection,” said Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba. “Given the circumstances and underlying importance of adhering to strict public health and safety requirements, we understand the delay and look forward to the reopening very soon.”
The facility closed in August 2024 after mold was discovered.
