Originally released in 2006 by My Chemical Romance off the band’s smash-hit album The Black Parade, “Cancer” was at the thematic core of the concept album, now considered a high point of the “emo” era — and the record that made MCR kings of the scene.
Today, Oct. 31, Sloppy Jane — the stage name/project of singer/songwriter Haley Dahl — shared a new recording of “Cancer,” one that stems from Dahl’s deep-seated appreciation for My Chem. Here’s her new version, replete with a string accompaniment accentuating Dahl’s passionate vocals:
“My Chemical Romance is my biggest influence as far as being an insane band with an incredible amount of world building. I’ve loved them since I was a kid,” says Dahl. “I started playing this song live while opening for other bands on the “Madison” cycle, as kind of an access point. I chose ‘Cancer’ because it’s piano and strings driven, and its message is ‘I love you, and now I will die,’ which is basically what I’m saying on every single song on Madison. I don’t like joke-y covers- I love the song and thought it would fit in with mine.”
The cover is the first release from Sloppy Jane since 2021’s Madison, a captivating and unpredictable album recorded in a cave and released via Phoebe Bridgers‘ Saddest Factory Records.
Tonight, Halloween, Sloppy Jane will take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl to open a special show with Bridgers’ boygenius (herself, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus) and 100 Gecs.
Sloppy Jane has more shows line dup in early 2024, supporting Pussy Riot and Deap Vally, in addition to headlining dates.
