Michael Oliva Artist in Residency at MOTR Pub
Michael Oliva, frontman of longtime local explosive psych-garage band The Harlequins will be adding a solo venture to his resume this month as he makes an appearance every Wednesday in January for MOTR’s artist in residency program. The month starts off on Wednesday, Jan. 3 with Carriers and Soften followed by Zoo and Waning Jan. 10, Bugsley and Jay Hill on Jan. 17 and The Dolly Daredevils and Pretty Mean on Jan. 24. The final date of the residency ends with Coast Off and two sets from Oliva, including a repertoire-expanding set featuring Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra violinist Eric Bates. Beef (Album Release), Sweeping Promises (Lawrence, Kansas) and Corker at MOTR Pub
This show acts as a label showcase of sorts for Cincinnati’s Feel It Records. Sweeping Promises, who Feel It shares with the legendary label Sub Pop Records, have been one of the most talked about bands on music outlets across the country in recent months. Combining fearless recording and song structure choices, the charm of home recording, a punk background and pop hooks aplenty has landed them some high level critical praise. The band is on tour from Kansas. Fuzz-punk rockers Beef will launch their new self-titled Feel It release at this show. It’s easy to make a guarantee this early and ahead of time that this is one of the best lineups of the summer. Richmond, Virginia, transplants the fuzzed-out and angular punk of Beef along with two of the most exciting bands to pump new life into the Nuggets-Stooges-'90s revival garage tradition, Detroit’s The Stools and Sugar Tradition, alongside the soaring power pop of The Cowboys, a band whose members stretch between Cincinnati and Bloomington, appear on one stellar bill. Additionally, it’s a record release show for The Stools’ R U Saved? out on Cincinnati-based label Feel It Records and a showcase, of sorts, for the somewhat newly Cincinnati-based label.
