“Daily Show” correspondent Michael Kosta mocked President Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-N.J.), who secured the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s primary election despite not having been seen publicly in months, on Wednesday’s show.
Kosta played an NBC News Now clip that explained, “The 57-year-old has been absent from his job for over two months now, not casting votes on Capitol Hill, no constituent events, and also not seen in any video statements.”
He then turned his attention to Trump’s endorsement of Kean, suggesting that only a person of very low intelligence would lend their public support to a seemingly absent candidate.
“I mean, at this point, you’ve got to be an absolute moron to give him a full-throated endorsement,” Kosta said before pointing to Trump’s Truth Social post endorsing Kean.
“Tom Kean has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election. Election Day is Tuesday, June 2nd. GET OUT AND VOTE FOR TOM — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Trump wrote.
“So true,” Kosta said. “Of all the congressmen who have been missing for two months, he is the most reliable.”
Kean ran unopposed in Tuesday’s primary for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, considered one of the most competitive House races in this year’s midterm elections, where Republicans hope to hold their narrow majority.
The congressman told the New Jersey Globe on May 21 that he was suffering from an unspecified illness but is “on the road to a full recovery.”
“I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents,” Kean added.
