It’s been 20 years since Channing Tatum made his big screen debut with 2005’s Coach Carter but the iconic heartthrob actor turned mega-producer, writer and director seems to have been a Hollywood staple for much longer. It’s not just Tatum’s onscreen charm as a comedy secret weapon, nor is it his rom-com leading man good looks. Rather, it’s the essence of Tatum continuing to give it his all onscreen that makes him film gold — and finally, with auteur Derek Cianfrance’s Roofman, all facets of Tatum’s talent are being fully unleashed.
“I knew that I was always going to be ‘the thick-necked, jock ex-model,’” Tatum told the New York Times about his career, which ranged from romance to action (White House Down) to comedy (21 Jump Street) before proving his versatility in dramatic roles. “Starting out, I’d get ‘Thug No. 2’ or ‘Cop No. 1’ in auditions, and that makes sense, right?”
Roofman director Cianfrance described Tatum as having a “boxer’s face and a dancer’s body” with his agile physicality, saying, “I thought that contrast in him — the beautiful and the wounded, the masculine and the vulnerable — was so clearly present.”
Tatum has called Roofman his toughest role yet: Tatum lost almost 70 pounds to portray misunderstood convicted felon Jeffrey Manchester in the true crime romance saga co-starring Kirsten Dunst. Tatum stars as a fictional soldier, John Tyree, who falls for starry-eyed college student Savannah Curtis (Seyfried). Dear John takes place over the course of seven years while John is deployed after the 9/11 attacks; the couple can only stay in touch through letters, and rarely are able to be together in person stateside. As their romance grows more and more complicated, their love never wanes. It’s Tatum at his romance best and gives a glimpse into his dramatic acting chops years before he was given more nuanced roles.

9. Logan Lucky

The 2017 heist comedy reunited Tatum with his Magic Mike collaborator Steven Soderbergh for a different kind of drama in Logan Lucky. Tatum plays West Virginia father Jimmy Logan who works with his one-armed brother Clyde (Adam Driver) and sister Mellie (Riley Keough) to steal money from the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. The robbery also involves demolition expert Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), but the criminal crew of oddballs botch a key moment during a popular NASCAR race — and lead an FBI agent right to the case. The film is a who’s who of It actors, including Sebastian Stan, Hilary Swank, Jack Quaid and Katie Holmes.

8. Foxcatcher

Tatum does love his crime capers: The actor portrays Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz in the 2014 true crime drama Foxcatcher, based on the prep for the 1988 Olympics. Mark’s fellow Olympic wrestler and brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo), is also asked to live with wealthy mogul John du Pont (Steve Carell) as Mark trains for the games. While a sinister and obsessive du Pont leads Mark down a dark path, he additionally becomes fixated on Dave and strengthening their team. The psychological drama leads to a tragic death and garnered Oscar buzz for the trio of stars.

7. Blink Twice

Tatum brought his star power to Zoë Kravitz‘s 2024 directorial debut as a heightened, dark parody of predatory moguls. Tatum plays tech billionaire Slater King, who lures a cocktail waitress Frida (Naomie Ackie) and her pals to his private island for a mysterious vacation. Yet as the drinks keep flowing and the party drugs cloud Frida’s memory, it seems as though Slater has his own agenda to keeping the women intoxicated. Blink Twice didn’t really land a critical discussion about its core message and themes, but Tatum truly gives it his all as Slater and provides a harrowing performance against his typecasting.

6. Step Up

There’s a reason why Step Up is still iconic. The film that spurred a franchise also kickstarted Tatum’s career back in 2006. The IRL former dancer plays Tyler Gage, a troubled teen who is sentenced to 200 hours of community service at the Maryland School of the Arts. Between serving his sentence as a janitor, Tyler has a Good Will Hunting moment in the school halls … and realizes he is actually a talented hip-hop dancer. It also helps that he can’t help but fall for ballet student Nora (Jenna Dewan), who convinces Tyler to help her with her dance routines. It’s Tatum at his best in tropes: being a bad boy lead with a heart of gold.

5. The Lost City

The 2022 Romancing the Stone-esque action rom-com The Lost City put Tatum’s top two skills — being hilarious and handsome — on display as character Alan, AKA Dash, a romance novel cover model. Alan sets out to save reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) after she gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) while on location researching her next novel. Of course, they fall in love thanks to a lot of physical comedy and tender moments.

4. Dog

Tatum expanded his resume by co-directing Dog in 2022 with producing partner Reid Carolin. Tatum stars as Army Ranger Briggs who opts to transport military dog Lulu across the country. The Belgian Malinois cast as Lulu has an ease with Tatum, who solely carries the film as a veteran working through finding his place in the world after being discharged. It’s a moving film, one that also promises a lot more of Tatum’s directorial style.

3. Magic Mike

It was the stripper sports movie heard ’round the world in 2012, kicking off a franchise that spans a stage show and film trilogy. Steven Soderbergh directs the legendary Magic Mike with Tatum as the titular lead: a handyman and furniture designer by day and an erotic dancer by night. Mike (Tatum) enlists a 19-year-old he calls the Kid (Alex Pettyfer) to teach him the tricks of the trade. Yet Mike soon learns that there is a darker side to nightlife underworld. This is the movie that arguably made Tatum a household name, and it’s key to his filmography.

2. She’s the Man

Tatum had a massive year in 2006 with both Step Up and She’s the Man being released. However, it’s She’s the Man that we have to put as the second best Tatum performance of all-time. Tatum stars in the teen reimagining of William Shakespeare’sTwelfth Night alongside Amanda Bynes, whose character Viola disguises herself as her twin brother Sebastian in order to prove that women are equally as good as men at sports. Tatum plays Viola/Sebastian’s roommate Duke, who has to thwart his feelings towards the undercover Viola while they both share a room … and the soccer field. Come for the scene with a tampon in Tatum’s nose, stay for when he declares his love with a wheel of gouda. It’s an iconic film for good reason.

1. 21 Jump Street

While one could argue that the 2014 sequel, aptly titled 22 Jump Street, is the more hilarious movie, we have to at least start with the first one. Tatum has said that it’s his most recognized role — and it’s probably his funniest. Cops Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) are high school nemeses turned police officer partners tasked with going undercover as teens to infiltrate a drug ring. The duo joins the secret Jump Street unit (based on the TV series of the same name). 21 Jump Street is the directorial debut of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and its sequel is even better. Make it a double feature for the maximum amount of Tatum.
