Movie lovers are well aware that a soundtrack can either enhance or detract from a film. The Independentreleased a list of the 40 film soundtracks that expertly use songs to elevate the movie.

The ranking, published in 2024, featured soundtracks from famous films, like Purple Rainfrom 1984, The Last Days of Disco, released in 1998, 1983’s Flashdance, 1986’s Pretty in Pink, Black Panther from 2018, Almost Famousfrom 2000, 2009’s 500 Days of Summer, and 1968’s The Graduate.

The Independent named Quentin Tarantino‘s 2003 revenge thriller, Kill Bill Vol. 1, the movie with the best soundtrack. The Ku Fung-inspired film famously uses unique songs like Nancy Sinatra‘s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and “Woo Hoo” by The 5.6.7.8’s.

The publication reported that Tarantino had RZA, of Wu-Tang Clan fame, provide the film’s score. RZA discussed his and Tarantino’s collaboration in a 2021 interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast. RZA described the director as “a very generous man,” in terms of sharing his knowledge of filmmaking. RZA also shared that he had “humbly asked [Tarantino] to mentor [him]” around 2000, after already being “a multi-platinum artist.”

“I learned a lot. I consider him, you know, especially when it comes to anything cinematic in my life, I consider him the Godfather of that for me,” said RZA, who has composed several other films, like 2004’s Blade: Trinity and 2012’s The Man with the Iron Fists, per IMDb.

RZA also said that he and Tarantino were “super duper tight” for a period of time and initially bonded over their mutual appreciation of Kung Fu movies. According to RZA, he and Tarantino have both seen an extensive amount of films from that genre.

“We started our relationship trying to outdo each other, movie knowledge wise, actually Kung Fu movie knowledge-wise. And I think if it was another [movie] category, I wouldn’t have had a chance, but at least in that category, yeah I was pretty much holding my weight,” said RZA on the podcast.
