It is draft day! And that means we need a thread so we can discuss whatever it is the Royals end up doing with their picks! First, let’s talk about how you can watch, because it’s not as simple as you might have hoped.
Draft coverage starts at noon Central Time on NBC and Peacock. They will carry the first 10 picks, including the Royals picking at number 6 overall. The next 30 picks won’t be on NBC, though they’ll still be on Peacock. However, they’ll also be visible on MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB+, and at MLB.com. Those are supposed to start around 1:30 central. At 3:30 p.m. Central, MLB Network will drop off, but the remainder of the first four rounds will be completed on the remainder of the previous set of options.
The fifth round through the end of the draft will occur over an eight-hour span tomorrow, starting at 10:30 a.m. Central. Those will only be available on MLB.com, MLB.TV, and MLB+. As much as MLB would like the MLB draft to somehow rival the NFL and NBA drafts, the fact that NBC only wants to cover the first 10 picks tells you just how far MLB is from reaching that goal. The fact that 3/4 of the draft will occur while MLB games are being played, as well as when the Futures Game airs, is further evidence that MLB simply doesn’t know how to divide things up in a way such as to allow people to be invested in everything that happens. But that’s an old argument we don’t need to expand upon.
The Royals have been tied to a number of prospects as, after the top three, it’s anyone’s guess how this draft might go. And no one can seem to agree on what order they’ll get drafted either. You can find all of our draft previews here. My personal favorite of the guys who are likely to make it to the Royals is Drew Burress, but they are increasingly being tied to Eric Booth Jr. Keith Law’s latest mock still has the Royals going with the former, while Kiley McDaniel has them picking the latter. There remains the possibility they could go underslot with someone like Jared Grindlinger, who does at least have an exciting name.
As draft picks come in, Matthew LaMar should have us covered with all the deets, but in the meantime, this is the place where you can talk about everything that’s happening. Who do you hope the Royals pick?
