A new report suggests Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s 2026 horror project has changed its title, moving away from its original Mummy name. The update, shared by an industry insider, hints that the Lee Cronin-directed film will take a darker, standalone approach. James Wan and Jason Blum are producing the film.
2026’s The Mummy movie may not have ‘Mummy’ in title
Scooper Daniel Richtman reported that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema renamed their upcoming horror film The Mummy to The Resurrected.
Richtman shared the update on social media with a logline about a father whose missing daughter returns after eight years. He soon discovers she carries the spirit of an ancient Egyptian mummy. As the evil spreads to his other child, the father faces an impossible choice. He must perform a deadly ritual to save them, even if it means becoming the monster himself.
Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin wrote and directed the film, which releases on April 17, 2026. James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions produced The Resurrected, starring Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, and May Calamawy. Cronin announced on Instagram that filming wrapped in June 2025. The project marks Warner Bros.’ first original mummy-themed film, separate from Universal’s long-running Mummy franchise.
Richtman’s report stated that the title change positions the film apart from the Brendan Fraser and Tom Cruise installments. Promotional materials for the movie featured the tagline, “Something terrifying will be unleashed in 2026,” signaling a darker tone than earlier adventure-focused versions.
Cronin told The Hollywood Reporter that the film will be “unlike any ‘Mummy’ movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” explaining that the story centers on characters “digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”
With no major release before February 2026, Warner Bros. has room to promote The Resurrected early. Industry trackers reportedly expect the first trailer to drop before the end of 2025, ahead of its spring theatrical debut.
