Is Diljit Dosanjh trying to carve out an image as an icon of defiance?

Hollywood has a quiet knack for erasing origins. Actors cross the border, land the roles, master the accent, and within a few years the question of where they’re actually from simply stops coming up. For Canadian talent especially, the transition has always been seamless enough to be almost invisible.

The three names below have each built careers so deeply embedded in American pop culture that their birthplaces rarely surface in conversation. Yet all three were born and raised on Canadian soil, long before Los Angeles ever entered the picture.

Ryan Gosling was born on November 12, 1980, in London, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in small Ontario towns, not on some sun-drenched California lot, which makes his eventual image as Hollywood’s definitive leading man all the more striking. Gosling was raised in Cornwall, Ontario, by working-class parents, and he began performing as a child, participating in talent shows alongside his sister as well as in dance competitions.

When he was 12, he successfully auditioned for a role on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, joining a cast that included future music stars Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake, from 1993 to 1995. That early exposure to American entertainment likely accelerated how quickly the world forgot where he came from. Known for roles in The Notebook, La La Land, and Barbie, Gosling is often mistaken for an American heartthrob. His career began on The Mickey Mouse Club, where he performed alongside Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, and his mix of indie films and Hollywood blockbusters has made him one of the most versatile actors of his generation.

He has received various accolades including a Golden Globe Award, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, and nine Critics’ Choice Awards. Still, despite all that stateside glory, Gosling himself has acknowledged the distance between his identity and his roles. Gosling has said, “I’m Canadian and so American politics aren’t really in my wheelhouse.” It’s a rare and candid reminder that the man playing Neil Armstrong and Ken from Barbie is, at heart, from the flatlands of southern Ontario.

Fox was born on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His father was a sergeant in the Canadian Army Signal Corps, which meant the family moved frequently across the country before eventually settling in Burnaby, British Columbia. At the age of 16, Fox starred in the Canadian television series Leo and Me, produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and in 1979 he moved to Los Angeles, California, to further his acting career.

Beginning his career as a child actor in the 1970s, he rose to prominence portraying Alex P. Keaton on the NBC sitcom Family Ties from 1982 to 1989, and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future film trilogy from 1985 to 1990. Both characters felt so quintessentially American that audiences rarely thought to question their creator’s passport. His quick wit and boyish charm made him a global icon, often associated with American pop culture of the 1980s, yet Fox remains one of Canada’s most influential exports.

Over his career, Fox won five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010, along with being inducted to Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2000 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002. In 2025, Fox was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Joe Biden. He holds both nationalities now, but the fact remains: the man who made time travel feel like an all-American adventure grew up watching hockey and listening to the CBC.

James Eugene Carrey, born January 17, 1962, is a Canadian and American actor and comedian, known primarily for his energetic slapstick performances and regarded as one of the most prominent comedic actors of his generation. Almost nothing about his comedy persona reads as Canadian. The physical chaos, the rubber face, the relentless energy – it all felt purely of Hollywood. Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, to Kathleen, a homemaker, and Percy Carrey, a musician and accountant.

Some time during his teenage years, his family became homeless and lived together in a Volkswagen van, while teenage Carrey and his brother spent months living in a tent in Charles Daley Park on the Lake Ontario shore. The family struggled financially; however, their situation started improving once his father found employment in the accounting department at a tire factory in Scarborough. That difficult, very Canadian backstory rarely gets mentioned alongside the slapstick stardom. Carrey began his career as a stand-up comedian in Toronto at age 15, showcasing his talent for impressions and physical comedy, and at 19 he moved to Hollywood, gaining recognition through roles in film and television.

He broke out as a film star after starring in a string of box office hits such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, all in 1994, and the success of these five films led to Carrey being the first comic actor to receive an upfront $20 million salary for a film, beginning with The Cable Guy in 1996. He has also been recognized with Golden Globe Awards for The Truman Show in 1998 and Man on the Moon in 1999. He later became a dual citizen, but his roots remain in Ontario, and with an accumulative box-office gross in excess of two billion dollars domestically, he is without doubt the most powerful and influential Canadian-born actor working in Hollywood since Mary Pickford’s reign during the 1920s.

Canada has been quietly supplying Hollywood with some of its most beloved stars for decades. The pattern is consistent: they arrive young, they adapt completely, and the world simply assumes they were there all along. These three are perhaps the clearest proof of it.
