After seeing her colorful hairstyle in the mirror, a 3-year-old girl from Oslo, Norway, became nervous moments before her first crazy hair day at school
Wanting to help her feel brave, her dad surprised both her and his wife by styling his own hair just as wildly before taking her to school
By the end of the day, the toddler had gone from scared to proud thanks to her parents’ encouragement and support
Some school spirit days come and go without much thought, while others turn into the kind of family memory that lasts forever.
In April 2026, Stella Davidson’s 3-year-old was filled with excitement while getting ready for her very first crazy hair day, but her giggles quickly turned to nerves the moment she saw herself in the mirror.
“She didn’t say much, but her face said everything,” Davidson, 37, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
What happened next was an unexpected show of support from her husband, Johnny Davidson, that not only helped calm their daughter’s fears but also reminded everyone around her how powerful small acts of encouragement can be.
On the morning of her daughter’s crazy hair day, Stella helped her toddler plan a look using the many colorful bows she already loved wearing. Together, they turned her hair into a collection of bright ponytails that matched the playful spirit of the day.
“She was excited the whole time and she was picking out the bows and handing them to me one by one,” Stella recalls. “But the second she looked in the mirror, she realized how crazy it actually was and got nervous.”
As the mother of two tried to convince her daughter to be “brave” and not remove the bows before leaving for school, her husband stepped in with a surprise neither of them expected.
“Johnny just walked into the room with his own hair done crazy too,” Stella reveals.

The unexpected, sweet gesture instantly changed the tone in the room. Instead of feeling alone, their daughter suddenly had her dad right beside her — with his own crazy hairstyle to match.
When the pair arrived at school, Johnny tells PEOPLE the “teachers at school laughed and thought it was great.” Many of the staff already knew his daughter could get nervous in unfamiliar situations, so they immediately understood why he had done it.
But for the 45-year-old father, the reactions of other adults were never the point. “Honestly, I just felt good about being there for my daughter,” he shares.

Watching the moment unfold left Stella emotional, especially seeing how naturally her husband stepped up for their daughter.
“It made me feel proud and really happy for my kids. Knowing they have a dad like this is such a relief and the best feeling,” she shares. “My biggest flex in life is that I picked a husband who would become a great dad.”

Luckily, by the end of the school day, the nerves that nearly kept their daughter from participating had completely disappeared. Instead of wanting to hide her hairstyle, the toddler came home proud of herself for being brave enough to go through with it.
For Stella and Johnny, the moment became much more than just colorful bows or a themed school day. It was a reminder that childhood is often shaped by the small ways parents show up when their children need reassurance most.
“We try to be conscious about the fact that every moment like this is what makes up their entire childhood,” Stella tells PEOPLE. “If we can make it special, we should.”
