Pass the popcorn, and settle in for a matinee screening of the 1960 romantic comedy “The Apartment.” The film stars Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director (Billy Wilder) and Best Screenplay. The story centers around Lemmon’s insurance clerk character who lends out his Upper West Side apartment as a career advancing tactic.

Catch a screening of a 1941 French (with English subtitles) mystery directed by Christian-Jaque. “Who Killed Santa Claus” is set in an alpine village on Christmas Eve. When a local elderly man who plays the village Santa Claus is found murdered, everyone becomes a suspect. Many motives are revealed as the town tries to solve a crime while still celebrating the holiday.

Add some excitement to the stretch between Christmas and New Year’s Day by taking in a hockey game. The UMaine women’s hockey team (Black Bears) will be facing off against Brown University (Brown Bears) for a non-conference game. Grab some tickets and hit the ice.

Portland hip-hop artist Adrienne Mack-Davis celebrates the release of her “Late to the Party” album with a New Year’s Eve show at Bayside Bowl. Mack-Davis came to Maine by way of Rochester, New York. She’s performed more than 1,700 times around the US and internationally, and her collaboration partners include Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Rakim and KRS-One. The show also features openers Oystahguy and Can’t Tell You and a DJ Set by Trial By Sound.
