Big Blast Blues Benefit for Eli’s Mile High Club
For the past few months, Eli’s Mile High Club, the bar and music venue that has been the home to blues and other music genres since 1974, has been facing financial challenges after the owner of a neighboring space sued the venue. This week, two bands, Margie Turner and the Outback Blues Band and The Bobby Young Project, are performing at a benefit show to support ongoing efforts to keep the venue open.

Laurel StreetFair World Music Festival

For the past 24 years, MacArthur Boulevard between 35th Avenue and High Street has been taken over by the Laurel StreetFair World Music Festival. The day-long event includes live music, vendors, food, and activities for the family. This year’s performers include Los Rakas, The Futurelics, Terri Odabi, Fogo Na Roupa, DJ Jafin, In Lak’ech Danza Azteca, Batuki, and more. The Black Cultural Zone will host a roller skating event and the Akoma Market with various Black-owned vendors.

Gray Loft Gallery’s summer show “The Art of Clouds”

How many ways can clouds can be represented? Twenty-five artists explore that question in a new exhibit titled The Art of Clouds at Gray Loft Gallery in Jingletown. Whether through photographs or drawings, each artist shares a unique perspective on how we view the sky. The exhibit is on display through the closing reception on Saturday, Aug. 23.

AfterGlow Chorus presents “Healing and Heart”

AfterGlow Chorus is getting ready for concerts the next two weekends to honor caregivers, patients, and the music of the late soul singer Bill Withers. The repertoire will include Lean on Me, Grandma’s Hands, and Just the Two of Us.

Hot tickets in the Town this week: Alexander Taite at Piedmont Piano Company

Oakland native musician and former Oakland School for the Arts faculty member Alexander Taite is performing an intimate hometown show this weekend followed by a post-show Q&A with fellow vocalist Sharmila G. Lash. This show is part of the Song & Stories series.

Coming soon to the Town: The Fray at the Fox Theater

Although Isaac Slade, one of the original members of The Fray, left the rock band in 2022, the band continues under the reign of Joe King, Dave Welsh, and Ben Wysocki. The band is coming to Oakland later this month.
