A late 1980s, early ‘90s music group is making a comeback.
Grammy-winning new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley announced that he is reforming the R&B group Guy, now known as Guy 2.0. As the name change suggests, the lineup will not feature original members Aaron Hall and Damion Hall.
Guy 2.0 will feature Riley with Fred “Jai” Robinson of Profyle, J Stylz of BS2, and solo R&B singer Ray Lavender. The quartet will also perform live as part of the “Teddy Riley Xperience.”
“Greetings IG! We are Guy 2.0!!” the group wrote on Instagram. “Follow us on our mission!!”
According to Complex, this is not the first time Riley has reworked past music groups. In the mid 2010s, he reintroduced Blackstreet as BS2 with an updated lineup (including J Stylz) performing hits like “No Diggity,” “Don’t Leave Me,” “Before I Let You Go” and “Take Me There.”
Riley, Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling first formed Guy in 1987, with Damion Hall joining shortly afterwards. The group helped define the new jack swing era of R&B/hip-hop music with two platinum albums featuring popular songs like “Groove Me,” “Teddy’s Jam” and “Let’s Chill.” Guy released its last studio album, “Guy III,” in 2000 and has sporadically reunited.
Riley, 58, was the lead singer of Blackstreet and Guy, buy is also known as a producer and songwriter for artists like Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Joe, and Boyz II Men. He won Grammy Awards for Jackson’s “Dangerous” (Best Engineered Album – Non-Classical) and Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” (Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal), plus was nominated for his production work on Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster.”
The new jack swing genre also featured artists like New Edition, Bell Biv DeVoe, Hi-Five, Jodeci, Al B. Sure, Tony! Toni! Tone! and Soul for Real. Bruno Mars briefly brought the sound back to the mainstream in 2016 with the hit song “Finesse,” featuring Cardi B.
