‘80s Music Icon Forced to Cancel Shows Due to ‘Painful’ Injury: ‘It’s Driving Me Crazy’ originally appeared on Parade.
Peter Hook, the legendary bassist in Joy Division and New Order, has been forced to cancel some upcoming gigs due to an injury.
The musician, who these days fronts his own band Peter Hook & the Light, took to his social media accounts on Monday, Aug. 11 to reveal the injury and the show cancellations.
“Unfortunately due to a shoulder injury sustained by Hooky which requires surgery, we have been reluctantly forced to pull out of the following shows:
August 23rd – @solfestofficial
August 24th – @campercalling
These are the only shows that are affected. Our apologies to everyone who was planning on seeing us at these festivals,” the message reads.
The message is accompanied by video of Hook apologizing and speaking more in depth about the injury.
“Hi, I just want to apologize for canceling the gigs that I had to cancel because I had an accident and hurt my arm,” Hook says in the video, which also features him demonstrating the lack of mobility in his left arm.
Hook shows he can freely lift his right arm above his head, but when he tries to lift his left arm, he can barely lift it above his waist without grimacing.
“Weirdly, it’s been letting me play but the pain his gotten so bad that I’m going to see a specialist and have an operation next week,” he says. “A torn rotator cuff for anyone of you who have torn your rotator cuff and realize how painful it is.”
“So, I’m really sorry about canceling the gigs, but this is keeping me up. It’s driving me crazy, so I hope you forgive me,” he adds.
Hook was a founding member of Joy Division, the legendary late ‘70s post-punk band whose career was cut tragically short by the suicide of singer Ian Curtis. The survivors of that band regrouped as New Order in 1980 and scored several hits, including the dance club favorite “Blue Monday.”
Hook left the band in 2007. He’s currently touring in Europe, performing New Order’s 2001 album Get Ready in full, along with a selection of Joy Division and New Order classics.
