Cyndi Lauper took a trip down memory lane as she looked back on one of the most defining moments of her career.

As the ‘80s pop icon celebrates her decades-long career, she honored the 39th anniversary of her groundbreaking album.

In an Instagram post, the music legend delivered a lengthy message with a heartfelt reflection on her journey of releasing her album True Colors.

Lauper recalled the ups and downs of her career at the time she released her second studio album.

“Happy 39 to the #TrueColors album! True Colors was a different experience for me in a lot of ways. When you’re on the bottom and everything changes, it’s good because it can only change from bad to good. But when you’re on the top and everything changes, you worry that the other shoe will drop. But I wanted to continue my work. I didn’t want to stop,” she wrote.

The “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” hitmaker, who also co-produced True Colors, expressed her gratitude to the “interesting folks” who joined her on her journey.

As the award-winning singer delved deeper into her story, she spoke about how she broke the barrier after pushing against how the music industry tried to box her in following the success of her first studio album.

“I did a cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and I also wanted to include ‘A Part Hate.’ But the label said it was too much of a change—that the Girl who just wanted to have Fun couldn’t suddenly become political. I said, ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ was political—don’t you get it?’ Me, I still believed rock and roll could change the world,” she furthered.

Lastly, the 72-year-old icon highlighted the true meaning and the message behind her album — the importance of loving yourself.

The post garnered positive reactions from her followers who were gushing over her greatness and contribution to the music industry.

“Cyndi always filling our lives with joy and charm, I love it!” one wrote.

“I love you so much Cyndi, I love your songs that express love, passion, longing, and that you will always be an artist who marks wonderful moments in our lives,” another added.

True Colors was officially released by Portrait Records on September 15, 1986 and earned her Grammy Award nominations, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
