Entertainment, inspiration for all ages

The R&B/neo-soul artist, 52, recently performed a limited, three-night show at Washington, D.C.-area casino MGM National Harbor, leaving fans with one resounding sentiment about how his voice has aged over time: “sheer perfection.”

Timeless catalog aside, the singer’s showmanship was not to be outdone, as he presented the full package: performance, vocals, live musicians, and sleek attire to tie it all together.

For the special occasion, the “Pretty Wings” crooner wore a collection of classy tuxedos—one all-black look, which he later transformed into a black-and-white number later in the evening after making an outfit change. He styled his hair in neat cornrows with beads, worn in a low ponytail.

Singer-songwriter Yola was tapped to open the concert. “I saw her during the pandemic on either Jimmy Kimmel or Stephen Colbert,” Maxwell noted of discovering the artist and adding her to his performance lineup, per Billboard. “She was singing a country rock record. I just love what she represents: her Blackness, her broadness, her scope, her limitless sense of things.”

Taking on a medley of some of his greatest hits, Maxwell gave moving and lively performances of “Lifetime,” “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Love You,” “Sumthin’ Sumthin’,” “Whenever Wherever Whatever,” “Pretty Wings,” and more, not skipping a single beat after over three decades in music.

In true gentleman fashion, he closed the show by handing out roses to people in the audience.

Fans React

Fans and concert attendees wasted no time taking to social media to express adoration for the standout talent and the residency series.

“Last night was AMAZING!!!!! I just brought my ticket for tonight. YES, I’m going again ❣️,” one raved in the comment section of an Instagram post, as another agreed, “Last NIGHT was MAGICAL!!! I have been following you, Maxwell for almost 30 years! You ARE AMAZING!!!” in part.

It was “sheer perfection” and “breathtaking,” according to two separate social media users.

“Had the best time!!!” an additional commenter exclaimed of the in-person experience.

One person summed it up quite poetically: “One of the best concerts I’ve ever experienced. 🙌🏾💐This show was otherworldly, transcendent, magical. ✨The artistry was truly on another level. Please release this as a live recording. 🙏🏾 Like someone else said, I need to relive this over and over again.”

Meanwhile, on X, fans’ feelings were mutual, as many reported being equally impressed.

“That was a great show last night in DC @_MAXWELL_ with the Ensemble you can really sing live,” one confirmed, while another declared, “@_MAXWELL_ MGM National Harbor show was incredible!! Everyone who touched the stage and was part of the show was incredible!! I’m glad we caught the show and it was the last night in DC.”

A third simply suggested, “If you can make it to DC tonight to see Maxwell, please go.”

“I really need Maxwell to give us a recorded gogo version of Ascension,” someone else pleaded, before noting, “[He] performs it every time he comes to DC but it gets better and better!!”

Maxwell’s Early Success & Career Longevity

The music star’s critically acclaimed double-platinum debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite (1996), established him as a major force in the R&B/soul genre, revealing such hit tracks as “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” and “…Til The Cops Come Knockin’.”

His first full project was followed by 1997’s MTV Unplugged live album, platinum performer, Embrya (1998), along with his most notable single to date, “Fortunate,” released in 1999, as part of the soundtrack for iconic film, Life, starring dynamic comedic actors Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.

A massive commercial success, the track spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the US R&B chart and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

2001’s Now and 2009’s Grammy-winning BLACKsummers’night add to Maxwell’s musical repertoire.

What’s Next for Maxwell?

Next up, the three-time Grammy winner will hit the historic Kings Theatre in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York, on Sept. 28.

Then, Maxwell is slated to usher in the new year by setting sail—joining up again with Lucky Daye and Kem, along with The Isley Brothers, Kelly Price and more special guests when he embarks on his third annual Urban Hang Suite Cruise. Taking place on the Norwegian Joy, it docks from Miami, Feb. 7-12, 2026, with stops in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.
