James Marsden is set to reprise his role as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, a role he said was special to return to.
What did James Marsden say about returning for Avengers: Doomsday?
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Marsden was asked if it was “strange” to step back into the role of Cyclops. Marsden joked that they almost waited until he couldn’t fit back in the suit, but was excited to return to a role that helped further catapult him into stardom.
“I’m getting a little long in the tooth to put on the superhero costume,” said Marsden. “I was excited because you’re a part of something gigantic, and I’ve spent 20 years listening to people say, ‘When are you coming back? When are you coming back? Are you coming back?’ I’m dead. Well, maybe not. I’m going to have a tough time struggling to get into costume if they waited a couple more years.
“So it’s been a blast. It really has. It’s been a nice little homecoming to a role that really put me on the map. It was the first real event project that I was ever a part of, and a very beloved character, this icon from the comics. And so to step back into that role was pretty special.”
Marsden will be one of several former X-Men stars to return to the world of superheroes with the upcoming Doomsday. Several X-Men characters are also coming back for the upcoming movie, including Patrick Stewart‘s Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen‘s Magneto, Alan Cumming‘s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn‘s Mystique, and Channing Tatum‘s Gambit. Marsden will be one of several former X-Men stars to return to the world of superheroes with the upcoming Doomsday.

Doomsday is led by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, but also includes Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright’s Shuri/Black Panther, and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man.
More names for the upcoming movie include Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent/John Walker, Tenoch Huerta’s Namor, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s The Thing/Ben Grimm, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Kelsey Grammer’s Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast, Lewis Pullman’s Bob/Sentry, Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm/Human Torch, David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Winston Duke‘s M’Baku, Hannah John-Kamen‘s Ava Starr/Ghost, and Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
