Gina Carano has settled her lawsuit against Disney and Star Wars company Lucasfilm over her firing from The Mandalorian in 2021 following her controversial social media posts.

The former UFC star and actress, who portrayed Cara Dune on the first two seasons of the Disney+ series, was dropped from the show in February 2021 after a string of what Lucasfilm then called “abhorrent” social media posts. Three years later, in February 2024, Carano filed an Elon Musk-backed wrongful termination lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm.

In July 2024, a judge denied Disney’s bid to dismiss Carano’s lawsuit, and now, just over a year later, the sides have reached an undisclosed settlement, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future,” Disney said in a statement Thursday. “We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.”

Carano added on social media, “I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force.” The actress also thanked Musk, “a man I’ve never met,” for “funding my lawsuit” and “backing my case and asking for nothing in return.”

“I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud,” Carano added. “I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”

It’s unclear if the settlement paves the way for Carano to reprise the role of Cara Dune in the upcoming feature film The Mandalorian and Grogu, as production wrapped on that film in December 2024. At the time of Carano controversies, the actress was also rumored to appear as Dune in a Mandalorian spinoff series Rangers of the New Republic.

Carano’s social media posts involved her thoughts on everything from the Black Lives Matter protests and LGBTQ+ issues like preferred pronouns to Covid-19 regulations and alleged, unproven voter fraud in the 2020 election.

After the hashtag #FireGinaCarano started trending, Carano shared an Instagram story that appeared to compare “hating someone for their political views” to the antisemitic treatment of Jews during the Nazi regime. It was that post that ultimately led to her dismissal.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” the company said at the time. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Carano’s lawsuit insisted that she “compared no one or group of people to the Jewish people during the Holocaust. Rather, she noted the danger that arises when one point of view is singled out for harassment.”
