It’s been roughly 15 years since the last time Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller starred together on screen in the Meet the Parents franchise. Back in March, it was announced that the original cast would return for a fourth installment, under the tentative title Meet the Parents 4.
According to Variety, Meet the Parents 4 has officially been titled Focker-in-Law.
For now, details on the movie’s storyline have not been released, with the title being a throwback to the surname of Stiller’s character, Greg Focker. Fans may remember that in the 2010 movie, Little Fockers, Stiller’s character is already a father to two children. It may be that the fourth installment and its new title tease that it’s now Greg’s turn to deal with one of his children getting married.
During the 25th anniversary screening of Meet the Parents, Stiller revealed they returned to the franchise because they had an “organic reason’ to revisit the characters.
“What spurred the idea is that I’m the age that Bob was when we did the first movie,” said Stiller to the crowd at Tribeca Festival. “It felt like a mirror to the first film, where one of my kids is thinking about introducing his person to the family.”
DeNiro also didn’t give away any details of what audiences can expect from Focker-in-Law, but admitted the script was “really fun” and is “looking forward to it.”
The fourth installment will be directed and written by John Hamburg, who wrote the first three movies. Joining Stiller and DeNiro as part of the returning cast will be Blythe Danner, Teri Polo, and Owen Wilson. Arianna Grande was also cast in an undisclosed role.
Meet the Parents was a commercial success during its release, receiving $330 million a the box office compared to its $55 million budget. The storyline follows Greg Focker (Stiller), a Jewish American nurse, who’s ready to propose to his daycare teacher girlfriend. The only problem is that he has to get her father’s approval, which doesn’t come easily.
