ELKO, Minn. — The Rochester Royals earned the No. 3 seed out of Section One for the upcoming state Class A state amateur baseball tournament.
The Royals did it with a convincing 12-5 win Saturday over the Elko Express.
The Royals were the No. 7 seed when the section tournament began, while Elko was seeded sixth. Miesville is the top seed out of Section One, while Dundas is No. 2 and the Royals are now No. 3.
Rochester rode a 12-hit attack in blasting Elko. Gavin Klennert had two hits — including a home run — and drove in five runs. Michael Michalak also had two hits and three RBIs, while Logan Milene, Mark Muenkel and Tyler Motley had two hits apiece.
Thane Meiners earned the pitching win. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs, just one of them earned. He struck out eight and walked one. Harmon Zylstra pitched one inning for the Royals and Aaron Terpstra tossed 1 2/3.
Elko managed eight hits against the Royals, who will find out Sunday night who they will play in the first round of the state tournament.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
