Anne Hathaway isn’t holding back her emotions.
The actress became teary during an appearance on “The View” Tuesday, July 21, after cohost Whoopi Goldberg reflected on watching her evolve into one of Hollywood’s most celebrated leading actresses.
“It’s been wonderful watching you grow up,” Goldberg said. “And you have just blossomed and turned into this fabulous actress … you need to know.”
Hathaway appeared to tear up before covering her mouth.
“I would be crying if I wasn’t pregnant right now, but it’s double,” Hathaway said with a laugh.
The 43-year-old, who earned an Oscar in 2013 for her performance in “Les Misérables,” appeared alongside “The Odyssey” costar Matt Damon and director Christopher Nolan to promote the upcoming film (in theaters now).
Hathaway stars as Penelope, the wife of Damon’s Odysseus, who relies on her wit and resilience to protect their home and hold onto hope during his decadeslong journey back from the Trojan War.
The actress, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, said motherhood helped her connect with the role. The couple also share sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6.

“I connected to it through the things going on in my personal life, being a mom lucky enough to be married to the love of my life, but even if I didn’t have that it was all in Chris’ script,” Hathaway said.
“What I saw was a story that I think a lot of people will relate to, which is a story of somebody who feels trapped by circumstance, is endangered because of it,” she continued. “As a result, she has to play a perfect game because people aren’t perfect because they feel safe, they’re perfect because they’re scared something bad is going to happen.”
In an earlier interview with USA TODAY, Hathaway called Penelope a “really, really rich character,” praising the intelligence Nolan brought to the role and the resilience throughout her character’s arc.
“It’s a really, really rich character,” Hathaway said. She added that Penelope’s jewel-toned costumes, designed by Ellen Mirojnick, and regal hairstyles by Gloria Pasqua Casny, symbolize her unwavering support during Odysseus’ absence.
“Penelope wears bright colors and does her hair every day because she is not in mourning, and every day could be the day that he comes home,” Hathaway said. “It becomes this almost defiant ritual that she has: She’s choosing life in the face of very damning odds. She’s choosing to believe that something miraculous can happen.”
