Florence and the Machine have teased the release of new music through a cryptic and unsettling video posted to social media.

The post, made on August 11th, showed Florence Welch furiously digging a hole in the ground. In the clip, Welch can be seen bizarrely sticking her head inside the hole and begins screaming.

No other details were given, but speculation has naturally increased that the band could be gearing back into life, three years after the release of their critically acclaimed previous record, Dance Fever, which was released in 2022.

To this end, the Florence and the Machine website has also been updated. It now simply shows a gold moon symbol with the message, “Something’s coming.”

The news comes almost two years after Welch was forced to postpone a series of dates while on the Dance Fever tour in 2023. She had to undergo what she later revealed on social media to be “emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life.”

She re-emerged earlier this year to collaborate with The Weeknd on a song called ‘Reflections Laughing’ for his album Hurry Up Tomorrow, having also appeared alongside Taylor Swift on certain dates of her Eras Tour last year to perform the pair’s song ‘Florida’, and joined The Maccabees at Glastonbury.

Welch also performed a seminal concert with the BBC Proms in September 2024, in celebration of the 15-year anniversary of the band’s debut album Lungs.

Whatever form this latest upcoming musical project from the band may take, it will mark their sixth album, following on from Dance Fever and High as Hope, which was released in 2018.

With Florence and the Machine fast approaching their 20th anniversary as a group in 2027, it is not known whether their teased new music could encompass elements to acknowledge that musical milestone.
