MMCRU Royals win the Class A State Football State Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KTIV) – The MMCRU Royals found themselves in the UNI-Dome Thursday, competing for the Class A State Football Title.

The Royals went up against the Saint Ansgar Saints and came away with the victory 30-17, making them the state champs. This is the team’s first championship since the MMCRU school district was formed.

The two undefeated teams began their championship game at 1 p.m. with the Royals taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after a touchdown and field goal. The Saints would get a touchdown in the second, but so would the Royals, leaving the game at 17-7 going into the second half.

The Saints would get a field goal in the third, making it 17-10 going into the final quarter. Ending out the game, the Royals would increase their lead while the Saints tried to keep up, ending the game 30-17.

MMCRU was the first-seed team of the tournament, while the Saints were the second seed. But both had a 12-0 record going into the championship game.
