The upcoming “Big Bang Theory” spinoff “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” has several alums from the OG series on the cast — but some of them are playing new characters.
Ryan Cartwright and Josh Brener will play Kyle and Trevor, respectively, on “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.”
Both actors previously popped up in “The Big Bang Theory,” which aired on CBS from 2007-2019. Cartwright played Penny’s (Kaley Cuoco) classmate in episode 8 of season 6, and Brener appeared in two episodes — episode 10 of season 5 and episode 16 of season 6 — as a comic book store employee named Dale.
Cartwright and Brener are billed as recurring characters on “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” but even some of the spinoff’s main cast members had only small roles in the original series. John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke) was in 25 episodes, Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) was in 15, and Lauren Lapkus (Denise) was in just eight episodes of the show’s 12-season run.
“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” star Kevin Sussman (Stuart Bloom) had the biggest footprint on “The Big Bang Theory,” with appearances in 85 episodes.
The new series will also feature a brand new face. Tommy Walker will portray Denise’s boyfriend, Gary.
As the title suggests, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” follows the titular comic book store owner’s quest to restore reality after he unwittingly creates a “multiverse Armageddon.” The apocalyptic problem begins after Stuart breaks a device built by “Big Bang Theory” OGs Sheldon and Leonard.
Jim Parsons (Sheldon) and Johnny Galecki (Leonard) are not in the cast of the spinoff, but it’s possible they could make a surprise cameo.

“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is the third “Big Bang Theory” spinoff, after “Young Sheldon” (2017-2024) and “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” (2024-present).
A premiere date for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” which will air on HBO Max, has yet to be announced.
“The Big Bang Theory” is available to stream on HBO Max.
