John Cena, who portrays the eponymous character in the DC series Peacemaker, recently spoke about why the show is important for the DC Universe ahead of the release of Season 2. The first season of Peacemaker premiered on January 13, 2022, serving as a spin-off of the DC Extended Universe movie The Suicide Squad (2021). However, the sophomore season is firmly part of the DCU. Chris Smith / Peacemaker had a cameo in 2025’s Superman, and several characters introduced in that movie are slated to appear in the upcoming chapter of the show.
John Cena on what’s ahead in Peacemaker Season 2 after Superman
Cena talked about what role Peacemaker will play in the overarching narrative of the DCU during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Season 2 premiere. When asked how this season will “top” the last chapter of the series, Cena responded, “You know what, I don’t think it’s about topping the last one. I think it’s about, especially in the perspective of James [Gunn], and I’m speaking for somebody else now, but I think it’s about furthering the narrative, instead of stand-alone properties.”
The Heads of State actor noted that all of the DCU were now “connected.” He added, “So, you saw as Peacemaker show up in Superman, and I think what you see in Season 2 is just a forward of that narrative, that whole DCU through line.”
Cena mentioned that the show’s next chapter not only takes the 11th Street Kids “through their next adventure,” but also contributes a lot to the progression of the DCU.
Headed by Peacemaker creator James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DCU is a fledgling franchise with a handful of entries in it. This effectively makes Peacemaker Season 2 as important a project for the franchise as Superman.
The cast for the second season also includes Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, and Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante. Peacemaker Season 2 debuts on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
