Robbie Williams has addressed the suss little white object that dropped onto his microphone during a live TV interview at the World Cup final, and no, it’s not what the internet thought it was (cough, nose candy).

The moment happened while Williams was speaking to German broadcaster ZDF after performing at the final in New Jersey. A small white blob appeared to fall onto the bright pink microphone he was holding. Williams picked it off the mic and carried on with the interview, only for the object to end up stuck to his forehead when he ran the same hand through his hair.

The explanation, according to Williams himself, was less scandalous and more minty.

On Monday, the former Take That singer posted a video from bed on his own Instagram, captioned: “Just woke up and feeling…Mint x.”

In the clip, Williams tells followers, “I’d just like to apologise for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday. Um, it was deeply unprofessional and people were worried about me but it’s okay, because I had several more.”

He then sticks out his tongue to show the mints and laughs.

The post had more than 233 000 likes, so at least the explanation is now out there.

Williams performed the FIFA World Cup anthem, “Desire”, along with Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini before Spain beat Argentina 1-0. But the bit everyone appears to be replaying this week is not the song, the trophy, or the tracksuit.

Hey, you can’t blame the internet from wondering whether the old Robbie was back.
