Steve Lacy, Khalid & More Queer Jams of the Week

From Steve Lacy’s first song in three years to Khalid’s dancefloor ready new track, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:

Steve Lacy, “Nice Shoes”

It’s rare to hear a song that captures lust and anxiety in equal measure, but Steve Lacy expertly walks that fine line on his chaotic new track. “Nice Shoes,” the artist’s first new song since his breakthrough album Gemini Rights in 2022, sees Lacy spiraling down a hole of being attracted to his friends while also subsequently panicking at the thought of wanting to sleep with them, all while a breakbeat rhythm and soothing synths color the record with an immaculate vibe.

Khalid, “In Plain Sight”

Sometimes, the problems are happening behind your back — and in Khalid’s case, they’re happening right in front of him, and he’s had enough. On “In Plain Sight,” the R&B crooner confronts a cheating soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend, letting him know that if he’s “the type to sneak around/ Then leave your keys on your way out.” The top-tier dance production and casual excellence of Khalid’s vocal help make this “dump his ass” anthem hit that much harder.

KAYTRANADA, Ain’t No Damn Way!

Over the course of his deeply impressive career, KAYTRANADA has worked with dozens of A-list artists to bolster his established sound. But the boldest choice the producer makes on his new album Ain’t No Damn Way! is to let his music speak for itself. Across 12 tracks, KAYTRANADA forgoes any and all features and allows his textured, stuttering sound flow in and out of grooves, vibes and feelings, making for a stunningly cohesive dance album that’s guaranteed to keep you dancing for all of its 35 minutes.

King Princess, “Girls”

Who’s looking for a self-destructive sapphic anthem? King Princess is ready to give you exactly that on “Girls,” her latest single off her forthcoming album Girl Violence, in which she pens an ode to the power of … well, girls! Over sad-tinged rock-soul production, KP croons about how girls “bring me to my knees,” as she sings to a lover who delights in her yearning. It’s pretty much everything you could hope to expect from a KP song at this point — and that’s a compliment to the singer’s impeccable branding.

The Aces, Gold Star Baby

The Aces are ready to let loose, and their new album Gold Star Baby offers plenty of encouragement for you to follow their lead. Over the course of 12 immaculately curated disco-pop jams, the four-piece band narrates a night out reveling in joy, sexuality and self-affirmation. The band’s production has been fine-tuned for the moment as well, with air-tight rhythms and well-crafted harmonies permeating each song on this deliciously fun new project.

Kevin Aviance, “Bloodline”

Leave it to a legend like Kevin Aviance to drop a stirring anthem for the queer community exactly when we need it. On his new single “Bloodline,” the ballroom and dance icon celebrates not only the resilience and indomitable spirit of queer folks everywhere, but also the history of queer culture that has fueled the spirit of rebellion LGBTQ+ folks are tapping into today. Add onto that the irresistible production of Aviance’s new single, and you’ve got a bonafide anthem on your hands.

Jay Som, “Cards on the Table”

You may not expect a beloved indie-rock star like Jay Som to produce a truly excellent electro-pop track in 2025, but “Cards on the Table,” the lead single off her forthcoming album Belong, is exactly that. A pulsing beat and twinkling synths give Som the space to process a complicated relationship, and she does so with some of her best vocals to date.
