It’s amazing to hear how much noise two people can make together, especially if those people are both wigged-out avant-garde virtuosos. You probably already know about Colin Stetson, the baritone sax master who has recently turned toward scoring tense films like Hereditary and The Menu. Stetson is a born collaborator; earlier this year, he released Nethering, the album that he made with fellow outsider types Greg Fox and Trevor Dunn. And that brings us to the other name in this blog post’s headline, the one you may not recognize: Scottish bagpipe experimentalist Brìghde Chaimbeul.
Experimental bagpipes, baby! It’s a thing! It makes perfect sense, too! People sometimes act like the sound of bagpipes is the ugliest noise in the world even when those things are being played traditionally and beautifully, so you might as well make some serious noise with them. Brìghde Chaimbeul exists within the new-to-me world of experimental Celtic music, and we posted her Colin Stetson collab “I Am Disposed Of Mirth” in 2023. Now, Stetson and Chaimbeul have gotten together for a full collaborative album.
Later this summer, Colin Stetson and Brìghde Chaimbeul will release their new album All The Light In The World. The two musicians wrote every song together, and no other musicians are listed on the record’s Bandcamp page. Lead single “Dirt Dance” is a deep, rhythmic seven-minute instrumental freakout that really explodes any ideas that you might have about what a baritone sax and a bagpipe can do together. It sounds like rave music from an alien planet. Check it out below.
