“The Breakfast Club” is returning to theaters next month in honor of its 40th anniversary.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures will re-release the John Hughes film in cinemas nationwide on Sept. 7 and again on Sept. 10. Fans can sign up here to get notified when tickets go on sale in their area.
The coming-of-age flick, which was originally released in February 1985, follows five high school students from very different social circles who spend a Saturday together in detention. Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, and Ally Sheedy all star in the classic title.
Earlier this year, the cast reunited for the first time in four decades for a panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.
During the panel, the cast praised Hughes, the film’s late director who died of a heart attack in 2009. “He liked us,” Nelson said, reflecting on working with Hughes. “I didn’t realize at the time how rare it was for a director to have such a positive relationship with actors.”
Hall emphasized how Hughes created a friendly atmosphere on set. “He was so right there with us throughout the whole process… He was the greatest, he was the best. It was always an ongoing collaboration with each of us.”
The cast also shared their thoughts on whether they’d ever do a sequel — and they collectively seemed against it much to fans’ chagrin.
Ringwald explained that the movie “is very much of its time” and didn’t represent the world today. “You know it’s very white, this movie. You don’t see a lot of different ethnicities; we don’t talk about gender, none of that, and I feel like that really doesn’t represent our world today. So I would like to see movies that are inspired by ‘The Breakfast Club’ but take it in a different direction,” she added.
In addition to next month’s screenings, “The Breakfast Club” is available to watch on the Starz app, or it can be rented on Hulu or Amazon Prime.
