By this time, I’ve given up asking “What’s new and exciting at the box office?”
Instead, I wonder “What reboot or sequel is coming along?”
‘Freakier Friday’ (IMDb)
In this case, it’s Disney’s likeable “Freakier Friday,” which involves not one, but two body swaps between women of different ages.
Younger theater goers may not realize it, but the original “Freaky Friday” was a 1976 Disney release starring Barbara Harris as the mom and Jodie Foster as her daughter. They switch bodies on Friday the 13th (check it out if you haven’t already. It’s from another time, but the message remains the same: Walk a mile in my shoes and maybe you’ll understand my perspective.)
In the 2003 remake, Jamie Lee Curtis stars as the mom and Lindsay Lohan as her teenage daughter who swap bodies after they consume fortune cookies.
Now Curtis is a grandmother, Lohan is a mom, and Julia Butters plays the daughter, Harper. At school, Harper runs afoul of mean girl Lily (Sophia Hammons.) And … wouldn’t you know it? Lily has a single dad (Manny Jacinto) who meets Harper’s mother. Sparks fly fast, and before you can say “I do” the two are planning a wedding, much to the dismay of their daughters who dread becoming step-sisters.
This time, a psychic is the catalyst for the double body swap. The mother-daughter swap parallels the first two movies, with the Lily-grandma swap an added attraction.
What I loved about the performers is their willingness to dive into the character of someone of a different age and world view. I always could tell who was who, and that was most of the entertainment for me.
There are a few Easter Eggs along the way, and one of them is particularly endearing: There’s a welcome cameo by Stephen Tobolowsky, reprising his character from the 2003 film. Nods to the previous movie include a fun performance by the band Pink Slip, and other characters and tunes that will delight “Freaky Friday” fans.
