Meghan Markle’s pal Bryony Gordon has launched a fresh attack on the royal family and accused the monarchy of failing to “help” the Duchess of Sussex.
Ms Gordon, a British journalist, has emerged as an ardent defender of “my friends” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and was even sent a complimentary jar of Markle’s jam.
It is understood the journalist befriended Markle in the early days of her courtship with Harry, and Gordon later worked on Harry’s ‘Heads Together’ mental health campaign.
Last week, Ms Gordon launched an impassioned defence of the Duchess of Sussex and slammed the monarchy’s “ridiculous double standards” towards the disgraced Prince Andrew.
The palace’s involvement in the disgraced Duke of York’s private life has been subject to fresh scrutiny in recent weeks amid the publication of a new book on the Yorks by Andrew Lownie.
“With each sordid allegation, I have become more and more furious that so little was done to help Meghan as she struggled with life in the royal family, while so much was done to protect Prince Andrew,” she wrote in the Daily Mail.
Since leaving the royal family, Markle has publicly criticised the monarchy for failing to protect her mental health during a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey and a Netflix docu-series.
Markle also made allegations senior royals made “racist” remarks about Prince Archie’s skin colour and erroneously claimed the palace “prevented” Archie from becoming a prince.
She also claimed that she secretly “married” Harry before their actual church wedding, a claim debunked by both the Archbishop of Canterbury and the palace.
Gordon appears to skirt Markle’s own possibly problematic behaviour, including alleged incidents of staff bullying that were subject to an HR probe, and alleged her friend’s only crime was a few “5am emails”.
“Somehow, Andrew got away with it for decades, while Meghan was branded ‘Duchess Difficult’ the moment she so much as asked the Queen if she might be able to borrow a tiara for her wedding,” Gordon said.
“Why is it that people will tolerate all manner of misbehaviour from the likes of powerful men like Prince Andrew, but not a woman who, according to critics, has a habit of occasionally emailing her staff at 5am?”
The impassioned defence comes as King Charles faces renewed calls to take harsher action against his brother Andrew to restore public faith in the monarchy.
