Milwaukee Film unveiled the first half-dozen movies in the lineup for the 2025 Dialogues Documentary Festival, covering topics ranging from the travails of a cat hospice to the life and history of the girl in the rubber slippers, aka Dorothy Gale.

The documentary fest, Milwaukee Film’s second, runs Sept. 18-21 at the Oriental and Downer theaters. More than 30 documentary programs are planned during the four-day event.

Each of the six programs announced Aug. 19 will be followed by in-cinema talkbacks including visiting filmmakers and local experts.

The first six-pack of titles unveiled for the Dialogues Documentary Festival:

“Cat Town”: This documentary celebrates Terry and Bruce Jenkins, the founders of Cats Cradle Foundation, a sanctuary and hospice for senior cats.

“It’s Dorothy!”: Filmmaker Jeffrey McHale combines interviews, archival footage and pop-culture moments to chronicle 125 years of Dorothy Gale, from the original L. Frank Baum novels to “Wicked,” and to explore how the character has become a cultural touchstone.

“Arrest the Midwife”: This movie shares the story of criminalized midwives in New York state, and the Amish and Mennonite women who have joined the fight for women’s bodily autonomy and reproductive justice. (The screening is part of Milwaukee Film’s Cinematic Sisterhood series.)

“Malignant Practice”: This Milwaukee-made animated film by Kristin E. Catalano tells the story of a young woman whose breast cancer was missed by her health care providers and how the experience forced her to become her own advocate.

“Wicket”: Breakdancing legend Bboy Wicket’s journey as he comes out after 41 years in the closet is the focus of this high-energy documentary.

“Shorts: Silver Linings”: The movies in this documentary shorts program celebrate stories of life later in life.

The complete lineup for the 2025 Dialogues Documentary Festival will be announced Sept. 3.

Individual tickets go on sale that day for Milwaukee Film members and Sept. 4 for the general public. Passes and ticket packages for the festival are already on sale: all-access passes are $65 ($50 for Milwaukee Film members), ticket six-packs at $80 ($65 for members) and 10-packs for $120 ($100 for members).
