Tommy the Animal released their debut album “Peach Blow” in 2018. Since then, the band has released “Speed-O-Meter” (2019), “Mule” (2022) and “Turbo Poetry” (2024) and completed three national tours while becoming a fixture on the western Colorado music scene.
Tommy the Animal’s sound is distinguished by tight melodic and lyrical hooks, rich vocal harmonies and the slick guitar interplay between Cofsky and Douglas.
One band whose influence can be heard in the band’s sound is Wilco.
“Wilco is one of my favorite bands,” Cofsky said. “I always try to channel a little bit of Jeff Tweedy somewhere in what I’m doing.”
The two pointed to Twin Peaks out of Chicago and Geese as other contemporary bands who they admired.
Douglas spoke of a camaraderie between the bands in Carbondale.
“There’s about five bands who are gigging a lot in town,” he said. “We’ve played with Sweet Jessup (and the Dirty Buckets) a bunch. They’re such a great unique band. We talk with all the other bands in town about what venues are good to play. We don’t necessarily collaborate musically, but there’s definitely a community support system. Everybody kind of helps everybody else find opportunities.”
Tommy the Animal isn’t interested in recreating classic rock. It’s trying to prove that the genre still has something left to say.
“We’d like to say rock is not dead,” Cofsky said. “There’s always a place for good technical guitar playing, good grooves and good dancing.”
New listeners looking for an introduction to Tommy the Animal might begin with “Indigo,” the band’s most-requested live song, before exploring “Ragtime Shoes,” “Burn My Wings,” “Shine On” and “I’m a Sailor.”
Tommy the Animal hopes audiences carry home the joy of live music, good grooves and the communal experience of people dancing together.
“We just want people to come away from the show happier than when they went there.”
Mountain Fair has been delivering on that very promise for 55 years and Tommy the Animal plans to kick the 2026 fair off today in style.
