Peter Gabriel Is Re-Releasing His Concert Film In an Odd Format originally appeared on Parade.
Back during the pandemic lockdowns, Genesis singer Peter Gabriel gave his fans a special gift: two concert films, directed by his daughter, Anna Gabriel. The films, Scratch My Back and Taking the Pulse, visualized a live show he performed in Verona on September 26, 2010, performing songs from his album New Blood. “Although I was recovering from a cold and not quite hitting the notes as I wanted, Anna did a wonderful job,” the singer wrote on his website. “The films Anna made have not been seen by a wide enough audience. Now many of us are at home and isolated, so we wanted to make them available to anyone interested with the sole request that you consider contributing to one of these organisations raising money to fight the virus.”
Despite already releasing the films digitally, Gabriel is re-releasing Taking the Pulse on physical media. And it’s an odd format choice: Blu-Ray.
The singer announced the upcoming October 10 release in a post on his website. The post notes the uniqueness of the show, as Gabriel performs many of his most popular songs with the backing of an orchestra instead of a traditional band. “Peter Gabriel and The New Blood Orchestra perform against a backdrop of massive screens projecting vibrant animations and visuals, dramatically contrasting with the night sky,” the statement reads. It sounds like it would look great on Blu-Ray…but who still has a Blu-Ray player? How many people even had one in the first place?
Blu-Ray never really had its moment the way VHS and DVD did. By the time Blu-Ray was positioned to topple the dominant DVD, people had already moved on to streaming and other digital formats. Should you want to dust off your old Blu-Ray player, you can pre-order a copy of the disc now for $19.98. Or you can buy a digital copy for $6.99.
