In early August, rumors spread that Howard Stern’s job was at risk as his $500 million SiriusXM contract neared its end. But now, reports suggest Stern and his team were the ones fueling that speculation.
The narrative about the “show being canceled” was allegedly a “desperate hoax” put into play by Stern, 71, and other employees, according to an article published by the Daily Mail on August 21.
“They’re desperately trying to make this thing go viral to try to boost his numbers for his return on September 2,” one source told the outlet. “His numbers are down so low that they’re desperately trying to make him relevant and get people to tune in to see what he’s going to say about getting ‘fired’ from Sirius. It was something they came up with on a viral scale to get people to tune in again. The numbers are so pathetic that they don’t know what to do.”
On August 5, a news alert dropped that claimed the longtime shock jock’s show wouldn’t be renewed after its next season, and a separate source claimed that none of the employees, including Stern himself, were aware The Howard Stern Show was getting the axe. However, the following day, the Private Parts actor recorded an “emergency show” and while he avoided addressing the rumors, he promised fans he would return on September 2 as planned.

Earlier this week, the show’s official Instagram profile teased that answers would be coming when Stern returned to the mic.
“Fired? Retiring? Canceled? Bye-Bye Booey? Howard Stern will speak. Tuesday, September 2. Only on @siriusxm #Howard100,” the caption posted on August 16 read.
As of now, there have been no official announcements from Sirius regarding the show’s cancellation so it looks like fans will have to wait until next month to get the final word on The Howard Stern Show’s future.
