Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal in Hamnet Universal Pictures
Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley’s new trailer for the upcoming film Hamnet, which focuses on William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes’ grief for their 11-year-old son Hamnet, was released last night.
Directed by Nomadland star Chloé Zhao and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film is based on the best-selling 2020 novel by Maggie O’Farrell.
The title promises to show the “untold story that inspired Shakespeare’s masterpiece”, Hamlet. It also starsEmma Watson and Joe Alwyn.
Already, fans of the novel have expressed how pleased they are with what they’ve seen of the production.
“The trailer captured the book,” @IdaAmaliassen wrote in the comments underneath the clip.
“The image of Jessie Buckley by the tree roots is exactly how I envisioned it reading it.”
“Who else is getting Shakespeare in Love vibes?” @debbiepfisterertrusophisticate added.
It inspired others to consider picking up the 2020 novel for the first time.
“This gave me goosebumps and I’d never even heard of the book. Will check it out,” @xanderk84 said.
And @otalobo wrote, “I simply cannot wait to see my Paul as Shakespeare!”

The film, which has an Oscar-winning director, has been described as a “lush and tender drama”.
It’s due to come out on 9 January 2026 in the UK and Ireland.
