Meaning, and the definition and pursuit of it, have become significant considerations in modern society, so when you hear Beau Anderson shout out “give me something meaningful” in his new single “Fix It,” it might just ring true. Today marks the debut of the song’s official music video, a fun, poignant clip starring Aaron Langford, Anderson’s old bandmate from Seven Year Witch.
Aggressive and heavy but accessible, the “Fix It” video features Langford as the spokesman for the product “Fix It.”Anderson is featured as a factory worker assembling tubes of “Fix It,” which is depicted as a snake oil product meant to act as the solution to any of life’s problems. He does the same meaningless work over and over again until he breaks free from this demoralizing cycle of life. Hunting down the spokesman through the woods, some cartoonish, revenge-type violence ensues.
Discussing the song, Anderson tells us:
“‘Fix It’ is kind of about being in shock at the state of modern life, and feeling helpless… like there’s nothing you can do about it, but at the same time seeing no hope of anyone coming to save you. This song, to me, is one of the grittiest on the EP. We went very raw with a lot of the sounds, which I like. Then, we added some fuzz. We got our Plasma Coil pedal out and figured out how to push the riff through that insane pedal. It doesn’t even sound like a guitar at the beginning, and I love that. That intro guitar riff sounded no different on the original demo than it does anywhere else in the song.
“I’ve had bits and pieces of the lyrics and music going as far back as 2020. But the song really started to take shape by the end of 2023. A favourite lyric of mine is the very first line, ‘Don’t it feel like we’re running with scissors, staring into the sun.’ It was the first line outside of the chorus we wrote. My writing partner Chase (Brown) came up with it, based on the rough chorus idea I had. It really set the tone for the rest of it. I just love how it blends two things you absolutely should not do. It kinda makes me imagine watching someone doing that willingly, of their own volition, and just throwing your hands up and saying, ‘Ok, I guess.’ And another one is, ‘I wish I’d seen the world before it burned down.’ I had had that one for years; I was happy to finally find a place for it.
“My bassist, who’s also our video guy, and I came up with the concept for the video almost a year ago, over some beers at our favourite pub in Athens, Georgia. It was meant to be a kind of wacky, Wes Anderson-esque take on Groundhog Day, with a healthy dose of cartoon violence in the end. Over months, when we’d have the time, we’d come up with more ideas for it and work out the details. Once we settled on release dates, we realized, ‘Oh damn, we’ve actually gotta go make it now.’ But it was a blast and we’re super happy with how it came out.
“In those planning stages, we always imagined our buddy Sam playing the part of the ‘Fix It guy.’ But he ended up moving to Spain before we got to start filming. Beyond Sam, I had zero idea who would be a good fit for the part until one day it clicked. Aaron (Langford). Aaron, my old singer from Seven Year Witch, was so perfect in the role. He was super excited when I mentioned the idea. He took it, made it his own, and took it to another level. Literally putting his body on the line by jumping through a table… twice. There’s so much good behind-the-scenes footage that we got. It was such a fun day with just me, my bassist Owen, and Aaron drinking beers and essentially saying, ‘What can we break and pour green goo on next?’ It was a very relaxed and carefree project.”
The release of “Fix It” comes in advance of Anderson’s debut EP, Soundtrack of Letting Go, coming on October 24th. Both groovy and gritty, the EP is a collection of songs about feeling stuck, also certainly very topical. Both the instruments and the lyrics are heavy, with a sound and themes that should resonate with college-aged young people who aren’t feeling much optimism for the future. Some of the more specific subject matter it dives into are the feeling of time ticking away on you, feeling trapped within that, not knowing how to get out, and trying to make sense of overwhelming discouragement.
Although it’s his debut EP with this project, Anderson has been playing in bands since he was literally 10. Now in his mid-20s, he has the poise and the experience to chart his own course forward. He recorded the EP in his garage with the help of his childhood best friend, Chase Brown, who also played bass. Also contributing was drummer Zach Neal, who also acted as the EP’s engineer.
In an old-school fashion, Beau Anderson has made an album that taps into a lot of meaningful issues for young people. If you’re feeling that squeeze, or you just want to rock out, then you’ve found a new artist to get excited about.
