Mudvayne have dropped their first new song in 16 years, “Hurt People Hurt People.”
The aggressive track touts an unrelenting barrage of groove riffs and gnarly production that crushes out frontman Chad Gray’s vocals with distortion. It’s a classic industrial nu-metal treatment, evoking the band’s commercial peak in the 2000s. As for the lyrical content, the song expresses a surprisingly positive moral lesson despite the sonic harshness.
“Hurt People Hurt People’ has probably been around since the beginning of man,” said Gray in a press release. “Certainly longer than the phrase ever existed. The endless cycle of projecting our pain onto others. I think I wrote this song as a reminder to myself to break the cycle. We create our own suffering, our own hurt. It’s time for us to create self-love and let go of the pain. It was never ours to begin with.”
The first new material from Mudvayne since their 2009 self-titled LP features Gray alongside guitarist Greg Tribbett, bassist Ryan Martinie, and drummer Matthew McDonough.
It’s this lineup that will be hitting the road for a co-headlining tour with Static-X. Both bands will be celebrating the 25th anniversaries of their respective classic albums — Mudvayne’s L.D. 50 and Static-X’s Wisconsin Death Trip — with dates kicking off September 11th in Dubuque, Iowa.
