Selena Gomez is celebrating her best friend Taylor Swift’s big news with a four-word message on Instagram following Swift’s engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce.
The day after Swift revealed that her football player boyfriend had proposed, Gomez reposted one of the engagement photos and wrote on her Instagram story, “When bestie gets engaged.”
Gomez, who is also newly engaged to music producer Benny Blanco, further highlighted their parallel milestones by reposting a photo of herself and Swift alongside their respective fiances. The post also marked the duo’s 16 years of friendship.
Swift’s engagement announcement drew attention to a resurfaced 2009 Twitter exchange between the two stars. At the time, Gomez was filming Ramona and Beezus in Vancouver and tweeted, “Discussing love with two 9 yr olds. That’s what love [is] supposed to be. Truly amazing, I’m never leaving Canada.”
Swift replied, “Real love still happens sometimes. It’s not just something we make up when we’re nine. I have to believe that. You do too.”
The message came when Gomez had recently split from Taylor Lautner, who Swift also dated that same year, before Gomez began her high-profile, on-off relationship with Justin Bieber.
More than a decade later, both stars are entering a new chapter in their personal lives at the same time. Gomez, who accepted Blanco’s proposal in December 2024, was recently spotted celebrating with friends on a yacht in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The outing fueled speculation it was her bachelorette party, though Swift did not appear to be in attendance.
Speaking on the podcast Therapuss with Jake Shane, Gomez reflected on their shared dating history of Jonas Brothers, saying, “We don’t know what we were doing. She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet.”

Gomez continued, “I was about 15, she was about 18 and that’s when it was the crazy curly Taylor and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up. I believe Love Story was the first song she had ever played me and it wasn’t released yet.”
She added, “Yeah, I was in a hotel room and I remember it vividly, it was just one of those songs I instantly heard and thought this is one of the most beautiful songs ever.”
“So, at that age we became best friends, bonded over the breakup. As girls do, and then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after and here we are now 16 years later,” Gomez shared. “Yeah, she is a chameleon. She’s incredible.”
